The Central Ohio car scene continues to be red hot for a second straight week. With events taking place every day, mowing the lawn may have to take a back seat to car or bike shows this week. Sunday is Father’s Day, and there’s no shortage of car and bike events for Dad to enjoy.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

The heat got turned up for Thursday evening’s Der Dutchman Cruise-In, and apparently a bunch of Corvette owners got the memo. A total of 257 vehicles filled the lot, including 28 Corvettes ranging from classics to late-model performance machines. Among the highlights was the Top Dog of the C8 lineup and a 1,250-horsepower ZR1X that drew plenty of attention throughout the evening.

Here are more of the cars and trucks that turned out for Thursday’s Der Dutchman Cruise-In despite the oven-like temperatures.

Harry and Mary Wise Memorial Car Show:

The parking lot of the Big Walnut Grill in Sunbury was the site of the 5th Annual Harry and Mary Wise Memorial Car Show. Registration was free, although donations were accepted to support the event. This year’s show attracted 165 registered vehicles.

Among the top award recipients was Annette Lieb, whose Hemi-powered 1962 Dodge Dart station wagon, affectionately known as “Big Booty Judy,” earned one of the show’s Top 20 Awards.

Capturing the coveted Best of Show award was a beautifully restored 1959 Chevrolet Corvette.

Bryan Mauger was on hand to photograph the event and shared these images of some of the cars that participated in the show.

The Heath Taste of Summer Car Show:

If you were in Heath on Saturday, you would have found the Heath Taste of Summer Car Show tucked behind the Walmart. Presented by the City of Heath and the Heath Community Arts Council of the Davis-Shai House, the show attracted 98 registered vehicles.

Dave O’Brien took home some hardware with his 1982 Chevrolet pickup, better known as “Orange Crush.”

The Hi-Way Starz Car Club was well represented at the show, with Bubba Hettinger and a number of other members in attendance. Bubba shared these photos from the event.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

This past Thursday evening’s cruise-in at Der Dutchman in Plain City, Ohio, had a special treat in store for attendees. A little over 30 Cobras made the drive over from the London, Ohio Cobra Show, bringing some serious muscle and style to the weekly gathering.

Among the sea of Cobras, one car stood out—not for its rarity, but for being a bit of an outlier. Somehow, a Dodge Viper found its way into the mix.

With the influx of Cobras and regular participants, the total car count for the night reached 301 vehicles, making it one of the more well-attended events of the season so far.

Each week tends to bring something unique to the cruise-in. The standout for “most unusual” vehicle of the night went to a 1970 Alfa Romeo — a car you don’t often see at typical car shows or cruise-ins.

To wrap up this week’s Der Dutchman report, here’s a look at a few more Cobras from the London Cobra Show that helped make the evening memorable.

Tint World Cruise In:

Tint World Automotive Styling Center, in association with the Columbus Chapter of the Mustang Club of Ohio, hosted its second cruise-in of the season on Friday evening.

Approximately 25 cars stopped by during the evening. Luna Pizza Kitchen was there serving up slices of pizza. In addition to the food, there was also a 50/50 split pot drawing.

No surprise the largest percentage of cars were Mustangs, other makes and models helped add some variety to the event.

It was a laid-back evening with great cars and a friendly crowd. The cruise-in will continue every month through October. The next cruise-in will be Friday, July 25th.

London Strawberry Festival Car Show:

Editor’s Note: The goal of these reports is to celebrate our local car events—not to criticize them—but when problems arise, it’s only fair to reflect the experience as it happened.

This year’s London Strawberry Festival Car Show was marked by confusion, frustration, and significant logistical issues that left many participants disappointed.

Although the show did take place, numerous reports indicate that it was not held at its advertised location on Union Street. Several attendees who arrived between 5:30 and 6:00 PM—just before the scheduled registration time—reported seeing no signs of a show or any event setup on Union Street. One attendee mentioned being told the show was “full” by 5:45 PM, despite registration being listed to begin at 6:00 PM.

The show was ultimately relocated to South Main Street near the railroad tracks for reasons still unknown—information that many participants only discovered upon arrival or through word of mouth. These abrupt changes, coupled with a lack of signage or communication, led to considerable confusion.

The relocated show area reportedly couldn’t accommodate many cars and filled up quickly. As a result, many attendees chose to leave—either heading home or checking out other shows instead.

One participant summed it up this way: “Definitely a poorly run show. I felt bad for the one guy running it. He took a ton of crap — including some from me — and it wasn’t even his fault. I apologized for ripping him a new one. He was a nice guy and handled it really well. He admitted the organizers screwed up and said they deserved to hear about it.”

For many, this year’s event fell short of expectations due to poor planning and a lack of communication. Still, as always, the Central Ohio car community made the best of a less-than-ideal situation.

One bright spot came for Kenny G., whose 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat took home the Best in Show Award.

The big event this week will be the Performance Charity Car Show in Downtown Delaware, Ohio on Saturday. Originally scheduled for July, the show was postponed due to weather.

I contacted the Dairy Queen in South Bloomfield, the Sonic Drive-In in Heath and the Rusty Lug Nutz group out of Pickerington. All three told me they will continue their weekly cruise-ins as long as the weather is good and cars continue to show up. All predicted they would likely finish by the end of October.

Der Dutchman:

The last cruise-in of the season at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, Ohio set a new attendance record on Thursday. The cruise-in registered 439 cars! This broke the previous attendance record of 401 cars set back on August 20, 2020. The photo below will give you a sense of just how packed the place was Thursday evening.

Downtown Delaware First Friday:

Approximately 25-30 cars turned out for the final downtown Delaware, Ohio First Friday event of 2021. Ghostbusters appeared to be the unofficial theme of the evening.

Tolles Car and Craft Show:

The Tolles Career & Technical Center in Plain City, Ohio held their 4th Annual Car and Craft Show on Saturday.

The show registered 111 cars. Instead of dash plaques, the first 100 cars to register received a unique etched wooden plaque commemorating participation in the show.

The show presented a total of 23 awards. There were no "Favorites". Instead, each car was entered into one of 19 classes. Trophies were presented to each class winner. There was also a People's Choice award, a Best of Show award, and two special awards.

Clement Thun's 1947 Chevrolet Fleetline Aerosedan was selected Best of Show.

Toy Barn Fall Car Show:

I registered to participate in the Toy Barn Car Show on Sunday but decided to go as a spectator due to the weather. I counted close to 70 cars and a decent number of spectators when I was there around 10 AM. Although this was a far cry from the number of cars and the crowd at the spring show back in May.

Other Area Car Shows:

  • The 8th Annual Mario Knapp Memorial Car Show held at Quaker Steak and Lube on Lyra Drive in Columbus, Ohio registered over 150 cars on Saturday.
  • Sixty-Five cars turned out for the 4th Annual BGMC Car Show at the New Beginnings Church in Columbus, Ohio
  • More than 160 cars participated in the Steve Austin's Auto Group Car and Truck Show in Bellefontaine, Ohio on Saturday. I received a report that the music was loud enough to cause hearing damage.
  • Rick Levine's 1970 Oldsmobile 442 convertible took Best of Show honors at the Community Christian Church Fall Craft, Vendor and Car Show.

This week starts the last full month of the season. Many of the "on going" shows and cruise-in will hold their last event for the season this week and next month.

There are lots of trunk or treat events scheduled starting the middle of the October so get the Halloween costumes, decorations, and candy ready.

Der Dutchman:

The unseasonably cold weather this past Thursday didn't deter 59 cars from showing up at the Der Dutchman Cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio. It was kind of weird to see everyone in long pants and coats again. Looking back, the last time coats were needed was the first cruise-in of the season back on May 3rd.

This Thursday will mark the very last Der Dutchman Cruise-In for 2021. The following week will be the banquet and then we'll have to wait until May 2022 for the weekly cruise-ins to resume again.

Marysville Muscle Cruise-In:

After Thursday's chill, the weather on Friday was just about perfect for the monthly Marysville Muscle Cruise-in at Honda Powersports in Marysville, Ohio. Chris stopped by with his 1970 Ford Torino GT, Jim drove his 800 HP Ultima RS, Ron arrived in his 1980 Z/28 Camaro, and Tim's 1968 Camaro made its return following a two year absence. Unfortunately, the food truck was a no show.

Two more cruise-ins are scheduled for the last Friday in October and November before calling it quits for the season. The weather will be the wild card for these last two meets.

Music in the Park Cruise-in Car Show:

Rained out in July, the rescheduled Music in the Park Cruise-In Car Show took place Friday evening at Stradley Park in Canal Winchester, Ohio . Hosted by the C-Town Cruisers, the event registered about 40 cars. Dale Pearce and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup truck received the People's Choice Award.

North Hills Car and Bike Show:

After skipping a year because of Covid, the North Hills Church of God in Springfield, Ohio resumed its annual Car and Bike Show on Sunday. The show had a record turn out with 203 registered cars and bikes . The turn out was so big, the church ran out of parking spaces and had to close registration early. Dick "Hot Dog" Ryman was the DJ.

Judging was done by everyone that registered a vehicle. If you've been a reader of this blog, you know I'm not a fan of participation judging. However, the way this show does it makes it a little more palatable. First, there is only one ballot per vehicle and the ballot has your car number on it. Second, participants can't vote for their own car, truck or bike. If they do, their entire ballot is null and void. And third, the ballots can not be turned in until after registration is closed. As with all participation judging, if you come with a club or group of friends you have a better chance of going home with an award.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the show a spectator's car pulled out of the church lot and hit an on coming car going east bound on Moorefield road. The hit spun the on coming car around 360 degrees where it hit one of the bikes parked close to the church entrance. It was a serious enough accident to require an emergency vehicle. Let's hope and pray everyone involved is okay.

Despite the commotion from the accident, the award presentation was only delayed by about 15 minutes. The Church presented awards to the Top 25 cars, the top five bikes, 10 special awards, and a Best of Show for cars and a Best of Show for Bikes.

David Salyers took the car Best of Show honors with his 1967 Pontiac GTO. David's car also received the Cook's Choice aware. The bike Best of Show went to a 1934 Harley Davidson VLD belonging to Craig Biniker.

Other Area Shows:

  • Bill Repp and his 1972 Chevy Chevelle took Best of Show honors at the Saturday Night Cruise at Nik Fixx.
  • The Fire Department in Laurelville, Ohio registered 103 cars at their show on Saturday.
  • The Shamrock Club Classic Car and Bike Show had an excellent turn out registering 95 cars.
  • The 1956 Ford Parklane belonging to Kim Miklos received Best of Show at the Gahanna Community Church Car Show on Sunday. Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup took the Best Truck award.
  • If anyone attended the Sunbury Lions Club Country Cruise-In on Sunday, please feel free to post info about it in the comments.
  • This is the second week in a row I received an email from a reader who went to an event only to find out it was canceled. Last week it was the Cruisin' Classics Monthly Cruise-In. This week it was the Green Cables Cruise-In. I know this can be very frustrating. Groups post their show flyers all over internet but then don't post anything when they cancel. If I find out a show has been canceled, I try my best to get the word out. All we can do is ask that show organizers show some respect to the car community and let people know when their event has been canceled.
