This week starts another month of the 2023 Central Ohio car show season. And boy is it jam full of events! At last count, there were more than 70 events scheduled for this June not counting the reoccurring weekly and monthly car events. No one should have trouble finding a show, cruise-in or meet-up in June.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

For the third week in a row, attendance at the Der Dutchman Cruise-In in Plain City, Ohio broke the 300 mark. This week it was 325 to be exact.

Once again lots of great-looking cars and trucks were in attendance.

Mark your calendars. There will be a celebration of life for Wayne's late wife, Luella, on Thursday, June 8. Wayne would love to see 500 cars attend.

Heart of Grove City Spring Warm-Up Car Show:

Shaun "Big Dawg" Saunders and the C-Town Cruisers were in downtown Grove City, Ohio on Saturday hosting the Heart of Grove City Spring Warm-up Car Show.

The event had a good turnout registering 108 vehicles during the afternoon.

Quite a few heads were turned when Dale Pearce pulled up in a new mid-engine Corvette.

Rumors began circulating that Dale had lost his mind and traded in "Ole Blue" for the new Corvette. Those rumors were quickly put to rest when everyone realized Dale was driving Dan "Boots" Longenette's new Corvette. The best part was watching Dale try to get out of the car.

Getting back to the show, awards were presented to the "Top" 35 cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The "Best Of" awards included Best Bike, Best Truck, Best MoPo(Most Potential)/Rat Rod, Best Club Participation (Larry Bickers Memorial Award), Junior Cruiser Award, and of course Best of Show.

The Larry Bickers Award for Best Club Participation went to the Old Goats Car Club. Larry along with Paul and Lynn Raduege and Frank Russell were the original founding members of the club which is now around 240 members strong. Larry passed away several years ago and Paul passed away last year leaving Lynn and Frank as the remaining founding members.

The Best of Show Award went to our good friend, Dan Varner, with his 1964 "Survivor" Chevy Impala.

Moonshine Festival Car, Truck, and Bike Show

About 90 cars attended the Moonshine Festival Car, Truck, and Bike Show in downtown New Straitsville, Ohio on Sunday.

Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 took home the Best GM award.

Best of Show went to the 1954 Corvette belonging to Steve Kidwell and Nancy.

Ye Olde Mill Rod Run & Picnic:

The Newark Rodders Car Club hosted its 52nd Annual Rod Run & Picnic at the Velvet Ice Cream Ye Olde Mill in Utica, Ohio on Sunday.

The beautiful weather and ice cream brought out hundreds of cars to the event. Dave Bratton said he arrived at 9:45 in the morning and was number 369! The final registration number ended up being well over 400 cars.

The horse-drawn carriage arriving and departing did create a lot of dust for cars parked close to the road. And of course, this time of year the fuzz balls from the cottonwood trees are not car friendly.

There was no Best of Show, however, there were two memorial trophies. One in honor of Barb Wilson who started the show 52 years ago and one for her grandson. The Barb Wilson Award went to Barry McPeek and his 1932 Ford Sedan. William Brown and his 1979 Mustang Pace Car received the Memorial Award for the grandson.

Antique Car Show and Petroliana Swap:

I had the pleasure of attending my first Memorial Day Antique Car Show and Petroliana Swap in Mount Victory, Ohio on Monday.

What a nice way to spend Memorial Day. Registration was free and optional. There were 192 cars registered by 1 PM with probably another 50-75 cars in attendance that didn't register. There were door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Food trucks and the Methodist Church across Rt 31 were available for food and refreshments.

Almost all the residences around the show area allowed cars to park at the end of their front yard and driveway. There was one grumpy neighbor, however, who had his entire front yard taped off.

Mount Victory is best known for its antique shops. However, the most impressive display of memorabilia is the oil and gas collection contained in the outbuildings on Donald Houchin's property. It's definitely a walk back in time.

Rogers Garage Memorial Day Car Meet:

Another Memorial Day car meet took place at Rogers Garage in Johnstown, Ohio. It's estimated that 200 or more cars attended the meet on Monday. Someone compared it to Der Dutchman on a slower night.

Other Central Ohio Car Events:

  • The Memorial Day Car Show in downtown Lithopolis, Ohio hosted by the C-Town Cruisers registered 175 vehicles. Best of Show went to Bob Kraft and his 1955 Chevy 210.

  • The Pauley Family Car Show Benefit in Sabina, Ohio on Sunday had about 50 cars in attendance.
  • The New Holland Community Park Celebration Day Car Show registered 75 cars on Saturday.
  • On Saturday, the Feast of the Flowering Moon Cruise-In in Downtown Chillicothe, Ohio broke the 100 mark with 104 cars.
  • I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Springfield Swap Meet and Car Show at the Clark County Fairgrounds. Three days of beautiful weather made for a lot of cars and lots of visitors. Our good friend, Jeff Shankle, posted over 450 photos from the event on his Facebook page. Here's just a small sample of the cars from the weekend.

Whew! A Holiday weekend and great weather made for an exceptionally long report this week. Next week will return to our regularly scheduled Monday posting and a little shorter report.

This first week of May kicks the 2023 car show season into full send.

Thursday sees the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City and Full Throttle Thursdays in Obetz start weekly cruise-ins.

Jax Wax will host its aptly named Street Madness event Saturday evening at National Trails Raceway.

Throw in a full slate of events on Saturday and Sunday and all the ingredients are there for a big week of car events in Central Ohio.

NEWS AND NOTES

Last week we lost another Central Ohio Cruiser. Calvin Rowland Jr of Urbana passed away on April 21, 2023, after a battle with cancer.

Many of you will recognize Calvin by his 1952 Chevy and 1987 GMC pickups. Calvin participated in shows all over Central Ohio with his trucks.

Our condolences go out to his family. Calvin will be missed.

Paul Radeuge Memorial Car Show:

Despite less than ideal weather for a car show, some 60-plus cars attended the Paul Radeuge Memorial Car Show on April 23rd at the Outerbelt Brewing in Carroll, Ohio.

The Best of Show award went to Blake Behrens and his 1949 Chevy Business Coupe.

Import Face-Off (Spring):

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Import Face-Off may well be the second largest car event in Central Ohio after Goodguys.

Check out these photos from the event posted on "TheFloat" website. The crowd is very impressive considering how cold and dreary it was that day.

For the second year in a row, the C6 Corvette belonging to Bling Amobi Breezy of the Street Kingz Car Club took Best Install and Best in Show at the Import Face-Off. Congratulations!

Logan Church of the Nazarene Car & Vendor Show:

Early morning showers didn't stop 40 cars from participating in the Logan Church of the Nazarene Car & Vendor Show on Saturday in Logan, Ohio.

Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup received the Best Antique Truck award.

The Best of Show award went to Greg Simons and his 1962 Mercury Monterey.

Dick Ater Memorial Jaguar Jubilee:

Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smarts Cruise & Ride crew presided over the Dick Ater Memorial Jaguar Jubilee Car Show in Springfield, Ohio on Saturday.

The show registered 70 vehicles. The show featured a nice silent auction with many items made from cut steel. Refreshments were provided by 4-5 food trucks on site. As you can see from the photo below, some of the awards presented were not your typical trophy or plaque.

Masonic Lodge 475/VFW 3761 Car Show:

Shaun "Big Dawg" Sanders and the C-Town Cruisers hosted their first show of the season on Sunday in Baltimore, Ohio. The show had approximately 35 cars in attendance. Dale Pearce's 1950 3100 Chevy pickup took home the Best of Show honors. Dale had a very good weekend.

Finally, our good friend, Phil Monroe, and his 1971 Dodge Challenger RT received the Peoples Choice Award at the London Walmart Show on Sunday.

If anyone participated in the Toy Barn Car Show on Sunday, please share your experience in the comment section. I'm sure there was a good crowd there.

The Miller Automotive Swap Meet and Car Show on March 11th in Chillicothe, Ohio saw several local cruisers receive awards. Anthony Musick received a Top 10 for Newer Cars, Jeff Tolley went home with a Top 15 for Older Cars, and Dale Pearce won the Best Truck and the Appreciation of Dedication award from the Ohio Automotive Event Preservation group. Congrats to all three!

Der Dutchman Thursday Cruise-In

Attendance at the Thursday evening cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio was back up by over 200 this week (229 to be exact).

Of note during the evening was the air-brushed pickup truck honoring our military and police, and the Columbus Soap Box Derby Association with World Champion Eleni Fischer.

The Columbus Soap Derby Association will be hosting a Free test drive on September 10, 2022. You can learn more about the test drive and other races at https://youtu.be/QYbYqepTxtg.

Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts Car Show

With near perfect weather Friday evening, the Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts store in Marysville, Ohio had 39 cars in attendance for its monthly car show.

The show raised more than $200 for the Marysville and Milford Center Food Pantries.

Charity Car Show

Saturday I drove to Circleville, Ohio for the Charity Car Show. The show took place in the parking lot behind the Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home on Main Street.

Chazziz DJ Service provided the music and Box 65 provided hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks at a reasonable cost. Registration was free with a donation of school supplies.

The show only registered 25 cars. Judging was done by points with three judges doing the scoring. Awards included Top Five, People's Choice, Director's Choice, and Best of Show.

These were the People's Choice and Director's Choice winners.

Blendon Senior Center Car Show

The Blendon Senior Center in Westerville, Ohio held its 18th annual car show on Saturday.

The show registered 61 cars. Best of Show honors went to Ben McGill with a 1966 Corvette restomod.

Vance Outdoors Classic Car Cruise-In

The 7th Annual Classic Car Cruise-in took place on Saturday at the Vance Outdoors in Obetz, Ohio. Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smarts Cruise and Ride team were on hand to host the show. All proceeds went to Honor Flight Tri-State as part of the 2022 Fill the Plane Campaign. The event raised $110,000 for Honor Flight.

The show registered just under 180 vehicles. The Best of Show Award went to Ralph Carle's 1959 Chevy El Camino.

Hot Summer Nights Cruise-In

Downtown Bellefontaine, Ohio was the scene of the annual Hot Summer Nights Cruise-In on Saturday evening. This is the show where all cars register at the Fairgrounds and parade up Main Street to the downtown area around 5 o'clock.

This year the event registered 361 cars with close to another 150 in attendance that didn't register.

Sunday Shows

Scattered showers in the area on Sunday postponed one show and kept attendance low in three other shows.

Bid Dawg and the C-Town Cruisers registered 30 cars at The Point on Main Sports Bar & Grill Show.

The 2018 Dodge Charger Daytona 392 of Chad Herrick received the Best of Show honors.

The Whitehall NAZ Annual Car Show just couldn't escape the rain this year. A forecast of rain on the original date of June 26th postponed the show to August 14.

Sunday the show had 25 cars in attendance thanks to the rain. Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup went home with the Best of Show Award. Tom Obert's Ford Mustang received the People's Choice Award.

I participated in the Wings and Rings Restaurant in Lewis Center, Ohio Car, Truck, & Bike Show hosted by Crossroads Events. This was the first of three shows scheduled at the restaurant this season.

The show registered 29 cars. Most of the show stayed dry until right before the awards ceremony. That's when a small cell of rain decided the parking lot full of show cars could use a litter water to finish out the event.

The Best of Show Award went to the 1947 Ford Special Deluxe belonging to Mike Mathews.

This week starts the last full month of the season. Many of the "on going" shows and cruise-in will hold their last event for the season this week and next month.

There are lots of trunk or treat events scheduled starting the middle of the October so get the Halloween costumes, decorations, and candy ready.

Der Dutchman:

The unseasonably cold weather this past Thursday didn't deter 59 cars from showing up at the Der Dutchman Cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio. It was kind of weird to see everyone in long pants and coats again. Looking back, the last time coats were needed was the first cruise-in of the season back on May 3rd.

This Thursday will mark the very last Der Dutchman Cruise-In for 2021. The following week will be the banquet and then we'll have to wait until May 2022 for the weekly cruise-ins to resume again.

Marysville Muscle Cruise-In:

After Thursday's chill, the weather on Friday was just about perfect for the monthly Marysville Muscle Cruise-in at Honda Powersports in Marysville, Ohio. Chris stopped by with his 1970 Ford Torino GT, Jim drove his 800 HP Ultima RS, Ron arrived in his 1980 Z/28 Camaro, and Tim's 1968 Camaro made its return following a two year absence. Unfortunately, the food truck was a no show.

Two more cruise-ins are scheduled for the last Friday in October and November before calling it quits for the season. The weather will be the wild card for these last two meets.

Music in the Park Cruise-in Car Show:

Rained out in July, the rescheduled Music in the Park Cruise-In Car Show took place Friday evening at Stradley Park in Canal Winchester, Ohio . Hosted by the C-Town Cruisers, the event registered about 40 cars. Dale Pearce and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup truck received the People's Choice Award.

North Hills Car and Bike Show:

After skipping a year because of Covid, the North Hills Church of God in Springfield, Ohio resumed its annual Car and Bike Show on Sunday. The show had a record turn out with 203 registered cars and bikes . The turn out was so big, the church ran out of parking spaces and had to close registration early. Dick "Hot Dog" Ryman was the DJ.

Judging was done by everyone that registered a vehicle. If you've been a reader of this blog, you know I'm not a fan of participation judging. However, the way this show does it makes it a little more palatable. First, there is only one ballot per vehicle and the ballot has your car number on it. Second, participants can't vote for their own car, truck or bike. If they do, their entire ballot is null and void. And third, the ballots can not be turned in until after registration is closed. As with all participation judging, if you come with a club or group of friends you have a better chance of going home with an award.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the show a spectator's car pulled out of the church lot and hit an on coming car going east bound on Moorefield road. The hit spun the on coming car around 360 degrees where it hit one of the bikes parked close to the church entrance. It was a serious enough accident to require an emergency vehicle. Let's hope and pray everyone involved is okay.

Despite the commotion from the accident, the award presentation was only delayed by about 15 minutes. The Church presented awards to the Top 25 cars, the top five bikes, 10 special awards, and a Best of Show for cars and a Best of Show for Bikes.

David Salyers took the car Best of Show honors with his 1967 Pontiac GTO. David's car also received the Cook's Choice aware. The bike Best of Show went to a 1934 Harley Davidson VLD belonging to Craig Biniker.

Other Area Shows:

  • Bill Repp and his 1972 Chevy Chevelle took Best of Show honors at the Saturday Night Cruise at Nik Fixx.
  • The Fire Department in Laurelville, Ohio registered 103 cars at their show on Saturday.
  • The Shamrock Club Classic Car and Bike Show had an excellent turn out registering 95 cars.
  • The 1956 Ford Parklane belonging to Kim Miklos received Best of Show at the Gahanna Community Church Car Show on Sunday. Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup took the Best Truck award.
  • If anyone attended the Sunbury Lions Club Country Cruise-In on Sunday, please feel free to post info about it in the comments.
  • This is the second week in a row I received an email from a reader who went to an event only to find out it was canceled. Last week it was the Cruisin' Classics Monthly Cruise-In. This week it was the Green Cables Cruise-In. I know this can be very frustrating. Groups post their show flyers all over internet but then don't post anything when they cancel. If I find out a show has been canceled, I try my best to get the word out. All we can do is ask that show organizers show some respect to the car community and let people know when their event has been canceled.

This week Central Ohio has a jam-packed Friday and Saturday line-up of events. Twenty-three events are on the schedule between those two days.

The marquee events this week are the Vettes, Rods, and Classics Car Show in Gahanna, The Vance Outdoor Car Show in Obetz, and the Powell Cruize-In and Pig Out in Powell.

NEWS AND NOTES:

Rain on Thursday dampened the Der Dutchman Cruise-In in Plain City, Ohio. I received word that only 26 cars braved the scattered thunderstorms and showed up last week.

Shaun "Big Dawg" Saunders and the C-Town Cruisers partnered with the Pharisburg United Methodist Church in Marysville, Ohio for a car show/cruise-in on Friday evening.

The show registered 50 cars. A free-will offering 50's style diner was served.

The Best of Show Award went to Janice and Sam Foos and their 1957 Ford Skyliner.

The Vanity Gentlemen's Club in Columbus, Ohio was the scene of the Heels & Wheels Car Show on Saturday afternoon. As you can guess by the location and name, it was not your traditional car show.

The Gentlemen's Club registered a total of 55 vehicles. The $15 registration fee also included a door prize ticket. I've got to say those were some of the better door prizes I've seen this season.

Everyone who registered a car got a chance to vote on awards for their favorite Vanity dancer. Since this is a "G" rated website, I won't list the name of the awards. I'll leave that up to your imagination.

The dancers did all the judging. Their pick for Best of Show was William Brown's 1979 Ford Mustang Pace Car.

At the other end of the spectrum from the Heels & Wheels show was the Purple Door Cruise-In at the Grove City Methodist Church.

The show busted its previous attendance record of 135 cars by registering 174 vehicles on Saturday.

Best of Show honors went to our good friend, Jeff Shankle, and his 1951 Ford F1 pickup.

The Life City Church in Pickerington, Ohio registered 80 cars on Saturday. Registration and everything else I'm told was free.

On Sunday the Buckeye Rod Builders hosted the 41st Annual Poor Man's Nationals at the Pastime Park in Plain City, Ohio. Just like in 2019, the event was free and open to all makes, models, and years. In other words, it was a big cruise-in. And big it was with over 245 cars. Just goes to show trophies aren't necessary to attract a large gathering of cars. Just offer some door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, refreshments, a good location, and some nice weather and they will come.

And finally, The C-Town Cruisers were out at The Point on Main Sunday afternoon for their monthly show at the restaurant. The Cruisers registered a little over 60 cars.

Steve Kidwell received the Best of Show award with his 1965 Pontiac GTO. Charlie Seymour and his 1967 Nova took the Ladies Choice honors.

We close out another month of the season this week. Lots of events are on tap for the Fourth of July weekend. The big event will be the Firecracker July 4th Show in Urbana, Ohio. It will draw between 400 and 700 cars depending on the weather.

NEWS AND NOTES:

The First Friday event in downtown Delaware, Ohio is reserving the same block again this weekend for classic cars. Cars are asked to arrive between 5 PM and 6 PM. No cars will be allowed in after 6 PM, and no cars will be allowed to leave prior to 9 PM. This is first come first serve so if you're interested in participating, get there early.

The cruise-in at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, Ohio had another big Thursday evening. Close to 60 Cobras from the Cobra Show in London, Ohio showed up at the cruise-in. Overall attendance for the evening topped 390 cars.

Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smart Radio crew hosted the first-ever car show at The Point at Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday. The show registered 57 cars.

One of the unique things offered by The Point was a canvas print of your vehicle from a favorite photo for $20. Our good friend, Dale Pearce, took advantage of the offer and had a print made of his truck. The end result turned out fantastic.

The Best of Show Award went to Jeff Fortner and his 1971 Buick GSX. Jeff's Buick has been on a "Hot Steak" lately. This is the third week in a row his car has received a well deserved top award.

Another big week of events in Central Ohio. The Auto Smarts crew will be in Grove City on Saturday. The Hilliard Historical Society is holding their annual car show, and the Empty Pockets Cruisers will be at Dave and Busters in Hilliard on Sunday for the Spring into Summer event.

NEWS AND NOTES:

Does anyone have any information on the Vintage Auto Club of Delaware? Is the club still active? Only four cars associated with the club showed up for the First Friday Cruise at Freddie’s on Rt 23. There was no music, door prizes, or 50/50 raffle. I heard a rumor the club has disbanded. If this rumor is true, please let me know in the comments.

Speaking of Delaware, the downtown First Friday event made the last-minute decision to block off part of Sandusky Street for classic cars to park. Whether or not this continues next month and beyond is still to be decided.

The Delaware Richwood Bank restarted their monthly Saturday morning cruise-ins. This month's cruise-in wasn't well advertised so only 19 cars turned out. Anyone bringing a car could get a free cup of coffee or latte from the coffee bar inside the bank. Participants were also eligible to register for several door prizes. The bank plans to hold two more cruise-ins on the first Saturday in August and September. They are tentatively planning a Halloween cruise in October weather permitting.

Because of inclement weather, The Cruisin' The Point Car, Bike, and Truck Show benefitting Summit for Soldiers was postponed a week. The show on Saturday registered a little over 50 cars. The Best of Show award went to Cadillac Mac and his Ford Galaxy 500.

On Sunday, Big Dawg and the C-Town Cruisers hosted the second show of the weekend at The Point on Main Sports Bar and Grill. The Point has become the quasi home base for the C-Town Cruisers.

Fifty-one cars registered for Sunday’s event. Once again more cars showed up that didn’t register.

Jeff Tolley and his 1965 Chevy C-10 pickup received the inaugural Larry Bickers Memorial Award. Larry passed away in May and was a regular participant at C-Town Cruiser events. The award will be presented at every C-Town Cruiser show going forward. It will be given to the individual who demonstrates a love for cars and exemplifies the car show/cruise-in culture.

The Ladies Choice selection went to the 1959 Cadillac belonging to Phillip Cunningham.

The Best of Show pick went to Jed Pallone with a 1952 Cadillac Coupe DeVille.

A bunch of Central Ohio car show regulars headed south on Sunday to the Lancaster, Ohio Fairgrounds for the Lancaster Old Car Show.

I’m told attendance was about 75% of what it had been in pre-Covid years. Despite the drop in attendance, the show still attracted more than 300 cars. The show presented awards to the top 50. There was no Best of Show.

There are events Wednesday through Saturday this week. Sunday is Mother's Day. Nothing local is scheduled so everyone can spend time with their mother and their children's mother.

The weekly cruise-in at the Der Dutchman restaurant in Plain City, Ohio starts this week. The start is three weeks earlier than in past years.

NEWS AND NOTES:

The monthly Marysville Muscle Cruise-in attracted more the 70 cars Friday evening. Auto Smarts Radio personality Dan "Boots" Longenette was there with his BADD '57 pulling his new custom trailer.

The Rod Knockers car club out of Marion, Ohio had another good turnout for their Ladies Night show. The club registered 94 cars at the Marion Rural King Saturday evening. The ladies picked all the award winners.

The Club's Favorite award (aka Best of Show) went to Tim Keckler and his 1927 Model T Ford.

It was a wild morning at the Toy Barn in Dublin, Ohio on Sunday. The high-end used car dealer held their spring car show. I don't know the exact count, but my guess is close to 300 cars turned out for the event. The line of cars just kept coming and coming.

If you're a car enthusiast, a show/cruise-in like this is akin to a kid in a candy shop. Almost every genre of the automobile is represented. There were classic cars, high-end exotics, muscle cars, rat rods, electric cars, and trucks. About the only thing not there were motorcycles.

The Sunday Afternoon Car Meet at the Point on Main finishes out this week's News and Notes. Host, Shaun "Big Dawg" Sanders and the C-Town Cruisers, registered more than 100 cars Sunday afternoon at the restaurant.

The Best of Show award went to Frank and his low mileage Ford Saleen Mustang.

There's a little more local activity this week. For those of you who can't wait until the weekend to get your car show fix, good news, you're going to start seeing events on weekdays from now until October.

NEWS AND NOTES:

I didn't attend the pre-cruise-in dinner at Der Dutchman in Plain City on Thursday, but I heard attendance was very good.

Shannon Rusell's car was parked under the canopy in front of the restaurant to honor him. Shannon recently passed away. He was a regular attendee of the cruise-in from the very beginning. I'm sure many of you will recognize his car. He will be missed.

The Car and Bike Show at Tony's Bar and Grille Friday evening in London, Ohio was the only judged show in the area this past weekend. The show registered more than 50 cars. This 1959 Corvette took Best of Show honors.
