NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

The evening was a little breezy, but otherwise provided great weather for the cruise-in. Attendance reflected those favorable conditions, with 371 vehicles on hand compared to 257 the previous week — an increase of 114 cars. There were also 13 first-time participants this week.

The Pleasant Valley Fire District EMS added a little extra excitement during the evening. Fortunately, the individual who required medical attention was feeling better and did not have to leave the cruise-in.

Two vehicles stood out during the evening. The first was this beautifully restored brass-era Hudson touring car, which garnered a great deal of attention and offered spectators a glimpse into the early days of the automobile.

The second was this heavily modified Chevrolet S-10 street machine, featuring a massive roots-style supercharger, race-inspired interior, and enough attitude to get everyone’s attention as it rolled into the cruise-in.

Next week is the annual London Cobra Show. If the weather is good, the cruise-in could showcase 50 to 60 Cobras during the evening. It’s always one of the most anticipated nights of the season and a rare opportunity to see so many Cobras gathered in one place.

Finally, some sad news to report. Longtime Der Dutchman Cruise-In participant Kenny Davis passed away on Saturday, June 13.

Many of you will recognize Kenny by his white Pontiac, which was a regular fixture near the pavilion each week. He will be missed by his friends and fellow enthusiasts in the Central Ohio car community.

Danbury Car Show:

The Danbury Senior Living Center on Snouffer Road in Columbus hosted its 3rd Annual Car Show on Friday. With near-perfect weather, the event enjoyed its best attendance yet, attracting more than 30 vehicles.

Show participants and residents were treated to live music featuring hits from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

Danbury also provided a terrific lunch that included barbecue ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, chips, and a choice of water or soda.

As a thank you for sharing their vehicles with the residents, every participant received a complimentary goody bag.

The combination of classic cars, good food, great music, and beautiful weather made for an enjoyable afternoon for both participants and residents alike.

Empty Pockets Cruisers Car Show @ Kuhlwein's:

The Empty Pockets Cruisers Car Club finally got its first show of the season in the books on Saturday at Kuhlwein’s Farm Market & Deli in Hilliard. The club’s first show, scheduled for May at the VFW Post 4931, was canceled due to inclement weather.

The event registered 76 vehicles, with all proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Participants also had the opportunity to win a variety of door prizes and take part in a 50/50 raffle. The grand door prize of the day, a 50-inch ultra high-definition television, was won by Russ Annis.

Jim McGruder once again did an outstanding job serving as the event’s DJ.

At the conclusion of the show, the Empty Pockets Cruisers presented awards to their Favorite 40 selections, along with four special awards. The special awards included Kuhlwein’s Choice, DJ’s Choice, Sponsor’s Choice, and Empty Pockets Cruisers Choice.

Here are the four "Special" Award winning cars:

Here are the rest of the cars that participated in the show:

Gary Zuck Memorial Car Show:

The 3rd Annual Gary Zuck Memorial Car Show took place Saturday at the American Legion Post 677 in Lithopolis.

Norman “Gary” Zuck passed away in 2022. He was a well-known member of the Central Ohio car community, particularly in the Lithopolis area. Gary was a member of American Legion Post 677, the Lancaster Old Car Club, and served as a Technical Advisor for 1955 Fords with the Crown Victoria Association. Over the years, he was instrumental in organizing many of the car shows sponsored by the post.

Saturday’s event attracted 130 registered vehicles. Awards included trophies for the Top 30 vehicles, two motorcycle awards, and Best of Show honors.

Dale Pearce earned one of the Top 30 awards with his 1967 Corvette.

Best of Show honors went to Andrew Van Ert and his 1968 Chevy Chevelle.

Marysville Cars & Coffee and Cruisin' with the King:

Marysville hosted two car events on Saturday: the Marysville Cars & Coffee at C & N Motor Cars in the morning and the Mid Ohio Cruisers Car Club’s monthly show at Burger King later in the day.

Cars & Coffee drew about 30 vehicles, while the Burger King show attracted more than 60 participants.

Jeff Shankle visited both events and shared these photos from the day’s activities.

Red White & Cards Car Show:

Dave Bratton made the drive over to North Lewisburg on Saturday to participate in the Red, White & Cards Car Show. The show was part of the community’s day-long festival.

Here’s what Dave had to say about the event:

“There were 19 cars and two motorcycles at this show. It was held in conjunction with a community festival, so there were lots of people in attendance. There were also numerous food trucks offering a variety of choices. I had the best BLT I’ve ever eaten from the Bacon Truck (see photo). It was mostly bacon and very tasty.

Other vendors offered a variety of treats, including cake pops. Another tasty item. They’re sort of like a Popsicle made of cake.

The show awarded three trophies for cars and three for motorcycles. Obviously, one motorcycle ended up receiving two awards. Trophy categories included People’s Choice, Oldest, and Superintendent’s Choice for both cars and bikes.

It was a nice setting and made for a pleasant country drive.”

Father's Day Weekend Car Show:

For the seventh year in a row, Vern Cook and his wife, Stacie, hosted their annual Father’s Day Weekend Car Show on their property in Springfield. Despite a few passing sprinkles on Saturday, the event attracted an outstanding turnout of 145 registered vehicles, with at least five more arriving after registration had closed.

Thanks to the generosity of participants, sponsors, and supporters, the event raised $6,300 for leukemia research at The James Cancer Center.

Awards were presented to the Top 32 vehicles, along with the Memorial Pick and Sponsor’s Choice award. Vern handcrafted all of the wooden awards himself.

Bobby Wong’s 1967 Chevy Camaro RS earned one of the Top 32 awards.

Kevin Foust’s 1941 Dodge WC 40 Weapons Carrier received the Sponsor’s Choice award.

Violet Springs Health Campus Farther's Day Car Show:

The Violet Springs Health Campus in Pickerington hosted its first annual Father’s Day Car Show on Sunday. Organized with the assistance of Dale Pearce, the event featured 12 vehicles on display.

Residents of Violet Springs Health Campus voted for their favorite vehicles, with trophies presented to the three vehicles receiving the most votes.

The 3rd Place trophy went to Wayne Withem and his 1974 GMC Sprint.

Dale Pearce earned 2nd Place honors with his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup.

Receiving the most votes and taking home the 1st Place trophy was Dan Messer and his 1957 Chevy Bel Air.

Violet Springs Health Campus also provided lunch for everyone who brought a vehicle, helping make the afternoon enjoyable for both participants and residents.

Leon's Garage Father's Day Car Show:

The 4th Annual Father’s Day Car Show was held Sunday at Leon’s Garage in Marysville. Sponsored by Leon’s Garage, Impact60, and Happenstance Brewing, proceeds from the event benefited Impact60.

For those unfamiliar with the organization, Impact60 is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting initiatives related to food insecurity, basic needs, homelessness, mental health, wellness and recovery, animal shelter support, youth development, and workforce development.

With nearly 50 vehicles in attendance, the event raised $650 for Impact60.

Bryan Mauger’s 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo earned one of the Top 5 awards.

The Other Top Five winners were:

  • Rich Yaus - 1964 Pontiac GTO
  • Brian Murdock - 1961 Chevy Parkwood Wagon
  • Mark Richmond - 1967 - Karmann Gia

Rich All's 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 received the Best Late Model Award.

Best of Show honors went to Rod Scott and his 1958 Dodge D100 Sweptside pickup.

Both Bryan Mauger and Jeff Shankle were in attendance. Here are their combined photos from the event.

Newark Moose Lodge 499 Car Show:

A lot of fantastic rides chose to spend Father’s Day at the Annual Newark Moose Lodge #499 Car Show. The event registered 174 vehicles, making it the largest-attended car show in Central Ohio this past weekend.

The Hi-Way Starz Car Club was well represented, with 18 members in attendance—double the number that participated last year.

Bubba Hettinger captured a large percentage of the cars and motorcycles on display, along with the atmosphere of the event, in this video slideshow.

Elks #37 Motorcycle and Car Show:

The Elks Lodge #37 in Grove City hosted its 3rd Annual Motorcycle and Car Show on Sunday.

Dave Bratton attended the event and once again shared his thoughts on the show:

“The Grove City Elks registered 54 cars and motorcycles. The show was well run and featured a nice silent auction along with door prize activities.

“I had never heard of an adult snow cone, so I decided to give one a try. Not bad! It was an enjoyable day with outstanding weather. Although I didn’t eat anything because I had just finished brunch, the comments I heard about the food were very positive.”

The adult snow cone is something I wouldn’t mind trying myself.

There were 35 trophies awarded, with Best of Show Cars going to Neil and Janice Thomas and their 1960 Chrysler 300F.

Doug Glassburn’s 1972 Chevrolet C-10 Stepside pickup received the Best of Show Truck award.

Doug and Dave shared their photos from the show.

Other Area Shows:

  • The Ashley Wesleyan Church in Ashley hosted a car show on Saturday in memory of Jim Foor. The event attracted 70 vehicles and featured awards selected by both participants and attendees. The People’s Choice/Jim Foor Memorial Award went to a 1963 Chevrolet Nova. Greg Nobis’s 1951 Hudson Hornet received the Congregation’s Choice award. Joe Harbolt’s 1966 Ford Mustang GT earned Best of Show honors.

Participants had the opportunity to win several great door prizes, along with four impressive participant-only prizes. The event also served as a strong show of support for BOX65, an all-volunteer organization that provides assistance to first responders. Here are some photos from the show courtesy of Carl Myers.
