Central Ohio’s summer car season continues at full throttle this week. Headlining the schedule is the inaugural Barrett-Jackson Columbus Auction at the Ohio Expo Center, bringing one of the nation’s premier collector-car auctions to Columbus for the first time.  

The week also features the always-popular London Cobra Show, the London Strawberry Festival and its related bike, car, and Jeep shows, plus the welcome return of the Westgate Park Bean Dinner Car Show. With something happening nearly every day, enthusiasts will have no shortage of places to spend time with friends and admire some outstanding vehicles.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

The evening was a little breezy, but otherwise provided great weather for the cruise-in. Attendance reflected those favorable conditions, with 371 vehicles on hand compared to 257 the previous week — an increase of 114 cars. There were also 13 first-time participants this week.

The Pleasant Valley Fire District EMS added a little extra excitement during the evening. Fortunately, the individual who required medical attention was feeling better and did not have to leave the cruise-in.

Two vehicles stood out during the evening. The first was this beautifully restored brass-era Hudson touring car, which garnered a great deal of attention and offered spectators a glimpse into the early days of the automobile.

The second was this heavily modified Chevrolet S-10 street machine, featuring a massive roots-style supercharger, race-inspired interior, and enough attitude to get everyone’s attention as it rolled into the cruise-in.

Next week is the annual London Cobra Show. If the weather is good, the cruise-in could showcase 50 to 60 Cobras during the evening. It’s always one of the most anticipated nights of the season and a rare opportunity to see so many Cobras gathered in one place.

Finally, some sad news to report. Longtime Der Dutchman Cruise-In participant Kenny Davis passed away on Saturday, June 13.

Many of you will recognize Kenny by his white Pontiac, which was a regular fixture near the pavilion each week. He will be missed by his friends and fellow enthusiasts in the Central Ohio car community.

Danbury Car Show:

The Danbury Senior Living Center on Snouffer Road in Columbus hosted its 3rd Annual Car Show on Friday. With near-perfect weather, the event enjoyed its best attendance yet, attracting more than 30 vehicles.

Show participants and residents were treated to live music featuring hits from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

Danbury also provided a terrific lunch that included barbecue ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, chips, and a choice of water or soda.

As a thank you for sharing their vehicles with the residents, every participant received a complimentary goody bag.

The combination of classic cars, good food, great music, and beautiful weather made for an enjoyable afternoon for both participants and residents alike.

Boston's Fundraiser & Car Show:

The Marysville, Ohio, Fire Prevention Association partnered with Boston’s Restaurant in Marysville to host a fundraiser and car show on Tuesday evening.

With temperatures in the mid-90s and a heat index topping 100 degrees, turnout was understandably light—just 13 cars participated. There was no registration fee, but attendees were encouraged to bring a new smoke detector or carbon monoxide detector to donate.

Several buckets of car care products were raffled off throughout the evening, along with a 50/50 drawing. At the end of the event, the restaurant presented 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place award plaques.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

With severe thunderstorm warnings across the area Thursday afternoon, attendance was understandably light at the Der Dutchman Cruise-In. Only 45 cars turned out, but two of them were first-time visitors.

Staying true to the weekly theme of unique and unusual cars, this newer Volkswagen Beetle with a highly customized exterior paint job made an appearance. 

Honda Marysville Motorsports Bike & Car Night Meetup:

Despite hot and humid conditions on Friday evening, Honda Marysville Motorsports hosted its June Bike & Car Night Meetup. Close to 20 cars and a similar number of motorcycles filled the lot.

Attendees were treated to complimentary food, courtesy of Honda Marysville Motorsports, with meals served from The Triple P Barbeque Co. food truck. Adult beverages were also available for purchase. All proceeds from the event benefit Impact 60.

For motorcycle owners, a highlight of the evening was the opportunity to have their bike dyno’d inside the dealership.

The evening offered a great mix of food, horsepower, and camaraderie for both car and bike enthusiasts.

Prairie Township Fire Department Cruise-In:

A heavy rain shower partway through the evening didn’t deter 100 cars from registering for the Annual Prairie Township Cruise-In on Friday night.

Awards wrapped up the show with 40 “Favorite” trophies and eight “Specialty” awards.

Kevin Martin’s 1962 Chevy pickup earned Best Interior, while Doug Glassburn’s 1972 Chevy C-10 pickup was chosen for the Chief’s Award by the Prairie Township Fire Chief.

Russ Annis and Arch Mayer were also among the evening’s Favorite 40 winners.

To say it was a "Red Hot" weekend for car shows is a bit of an understatement. Temperatures well into the 90s caused the cancellation or postponement of four shows scheduled for the weekend. Unfortunately, a lot of cruisers stayed home this week because of the heat.

The Inn at Olentangy Trail Classic Car Show:

The Inn at Olentangy Trail Assisted Living Center hosted several car shows pre-Covid. The last one being in June of 2019 in which there were 56 cars in attendance. Fast forward to last Tuesday and the Inn at Olentangy Trail decided to pick up where it left off by hosting another car show.

Registration was $15 and included a dinner spread consisting of hot dogs, chips, corn on the cob, watermelon, ice cream, and drinks. There were also door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds went to benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

The Orange Township Fire Department brought one of its fire trucks to the show and a bounce house was set up for the kids.

There were awards for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cars selected by the residents of the Inn at Olentangy Trail.

Third Place went to Brad Smith with a 1931 Ford pickup truck.

Ken Kubinski's 1967 Pontiac Firebird received the Second Place Award.

Tom Rizek's 1968 Chevy Camaro was chosen First Place.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

Despite temperatures well into the 90s this past Thursday, attendance reached 190 cars. Of the 190, approximately 40 were Cobras that were in town for the London Cobra Show.

Nothing unique or unusual to report this week. However, this 1948 Chevy pickup truck received a lot of attention.

Just to give everyone a heads up. The 4th of July is on a Thursday this year. The restaurant will have reduced hours that day so there will be NO cruise-in on July 4th.

Mountainview Christian Church Car Show:

For the second year in a row, the Mountainview Christian Church in Columbus, Ohio hosted a benefit car show to raise funds for a Hurricane Relief Mission Trip to Puerto Rico.

The theme of the show was "Gettin' The Cruise Back Together" a reference to the Blues Brothers. You'll see that reference in the awards.

Registration was $10 and included one door prize ticket. There was also a large array of silent auction items to bid on.

The church had food and drink available to buy. The main entree included pulled pork sandwiches or hot dogs.

This year the Church registered 31 cars. The 1901 Oldsmobile with a five-horsepower engine was the most unique vehicle at the show.

There were 17 Sponsor's Choice Awards. No Best of Show.

The big winners were Dean Maisenbacher with a 1961 Chevy Parkwood station wagon and Dave Bratton with a 1937 Wild Rod Ford.

Many of us sat under a large maple tree for most of the show. The shade and slight breeze made the afternoon bearable.

Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride at Massey's Pizza:

Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smarts Cruise and Ride team made their annual stop at Massey's Pizza at the Indian Mound Mall in Heath, Ohio on Saturday.

The heat made a huge difference in attendance this year. The show registered 32 cars on Saturday compared to the record-setting 182 cars last year.

Tom and Tommy Obert received Best Mustang and Massey's Pick.

Dale Pearce took home the Best Truck Award with his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup.

Best of Show went to Terry Treneff's 1955 Chevy Nomad.

Crossroads Car, Truck, & Bike Show at Earthworks Cafe:

The Crossroads Event team was back at Earthworks Cafe in Newark, Ohio on Saturday hosting the monthly car show at the restaurant.

The Earthworks Cafe staff was very accommodating letting everyone sit inside to get away from the heat.

Bubba Hettinger received the Veteran Owned Vehicle Award with his 1978 Chevy K10 Stepside 4x4 pickup.

Ron Howell's 2015 Chevy Corvette Z51 took home the Best of Show Honors.

The Crossroads Events team will be back at the Earthworks Cafe for the July show on July 27th. This coming Saturday (6/29/24) you can join them at the East West Restaurant in Heath, Ohio.
