Please Note: Shaun “Big Dawg” Sanders of the C-Town Cruisers let me know that the two remaining shows at The Point on Main Sports Bar, scheduled for July 5th and August 2nd, have been canceled.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

Attendance started out slowly on Thursday evening due to an initial weather forecast calling for showers around 6:00 p.m. Once it became apparent the rain would hold off, attendance picked up steadily, reaching 234 vehicles by the end of the cruise-in. Approximately 32 of those were Cobras participating in the London Cobra Show.

Here are some of the non-Cobra vehicles that Jeff Shankle and I captured during the evening.

Friday at Barrett-Jackson:

I spent a few hours on Friday at the inaugural Barrett-Jackson auction at the Ohio Expo Center. Billed as “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction,” the event certainly lived up to its reputation.

There was no shortage of food vendors, exhibitors, and, of course, incredible cars. When you needed a break from looking at the vehicles, Dodge was offering thrill rides in its new gasoline-powered SIXPACK Charger models.

One of the most interesting aspects of the visit was seeing what the cars actually sold for. After each vehicle crossed the auction block, it was moved under one of several large tents where a SOLD sign was placed on the windshield showing the final sale price. Here are a few examples:

Of course, the main action took place inside the Celeste Center, where the vehicles were auctioned. The large crowd of bidders on the auction floor, combined with the spectators filling the grandstands, made for quite a spectacle. The entire operation ran like a well-oiled machine and was very impressive to watch.

Several familiar faces from the Central Ohio car community were involved in the event. Mark and Patty Enyart were selling their 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS, giving me the opportunity to learn how the auction works from a seller’s perspective.

The Meguiar’s booth featured Jim McGruder’s 2020 Chevrolet Corvette.

Members of the Mustang club helped move vehicles through the staging area. Our good friend Phil Spangler was spotted on TV driving one of the auction cars across the block.

Before heading home, I stopped by the Kasich Building, where many of the top-dollar vehicles scheduled for Saturday’s auction were on display. Here are a few of those amazing cars.

It was a fun way to spend a few hours and a great opportunity to experience one of the world’s premier collector car auctions without leaving Central Ohio. Let's hope Barrett-Jackson will make a return visit to Columbus in the future.

Rain Hurts Attendance at Friday Events:

Rain that moved through the area around 4:00 p.m. significantly reduced attendance at Friday evening’s events.

The London Strawberry Festival Car Show attracted just 11 vehicles. Bobby Wong’s 1967 Camaro RS received the 2nd Place award, while 1st Place or Best of Show honors went to Rick Jones and his 1956 Ford F-100 pickup.

Doug Mullen and Jackie Rolfe-Hiles received awards at the rain-soaked Stars and Stripes Festival in Sugar Grove.

The Prairie Township Fire Department Cruise-In typically attracts 100 or more vehicles on a dry Friday evening. Friday's rain, however, held attendance to just 27 cars. Despite the small turnout, organizers still presented Top 40 awards along with several special awards. As a result, everyone who attended went home with some hardware.

Here are the top award winners:

The 1957 Chevy Bel Air belonging to Jim Loftus was selected Best of Show.

Here are the rest of the cars that braved the rain to attend the event.

A big shoutout to Doug Glassburn for the photos and list of "Special" award winners.

Wet weather continued to affect attendance on Saturday, as many roads remained wet well into the late morning.

Westgate Bean Dinner Car Show:

After a several-year absence, the Westgate Park Bean Dinner Car Show returned on Saturday and registered 67 vehicles.

Russ Annis took home the Best GM ’95 and Newer award with his 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS. Jim Loftus earned Best GM ’94 and Older with his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, while Doug Glassburn received Best Custom Truck honors for his 1972 Chevrolet C-10 Stepside pickup.

Best of Show went to Jeremy and Angela Burdge for their 1960 Chrysler Imperial Crown.

Deer Creek State Park Car Show:

Friends of Deer Creek hosted its 2nd Annual Car Show at Deer Creek State Park on Saturday. The lingering wet weather took its toll on attendance, with just 25 vehicles participating compared to 144 at last year’s inaugural event.

Rick Jones and his 1956 Ford F-100 pickup earned both a Top 40 award and Best Truck honors. Gary Hamilton’s 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo SS and Tom Lawrence’s 2008 Volkswagen Beetle each received Top 40 awards.

Here are some of the other vehicles from the show thanks to Tom Lawrence.

Earth Angel Super Cruise-In:

The Earth Angel Foundation hosted its 39th Annual Super Cruise-In at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds in Lancaster on Saturday.

As much as the rain tried to ruin one of the area’s top car shows, it didn't succeed. I don’t have an official attendance figure, but Dave and Jackie Hiles, Chuck McKeever, and Doug Mullen, didn’t let a few raindrops spoil their day. All went home with beautifully engraved Top 80 glass awards.

Stockhands Horses for Healing Car Show:

For the second straight year, the Artomotive facility in Radnor was the site of the Stockhands Horses for Healing Car Show. Scott Harrington was there and sent this report.

“Seventy-five vehicles were registered for the Stockhands Horses for Healing Car Show in Radnor on Saturday, June 27. There were several ominous dark clouds between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., but they ‘held it together.’ Technically, a light drizzle fell during the awards presentation.

The first 10 awards were specialty awards selected by the participants:

  • Most Likely to Get Pulled Over
  • Least Likely to Make It Home
  • Mullet Mobile
  • Financial Mistake
  • Spirit of Hot Rodding
  • Diamond in the Rough
  • Speed Bump Hater
  • Slowest Ride
  • Tailgater (Coolest Truck)
  • Detail Master

Fifty general awards were then distributed. There was a wide variety of cars, trucks, and motorcycles, spanning nearly 100 years of automotive history. Eric Smith presented the Artomotive Award to a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro, recognizing it as the vehicle that best represented the company’s ideals of a fun and spirited automobile.

I was very impressed by the greeter at the entrance who welcomed me to the show and directed me where to park. There were numerous prizes, a sizable 50/50 jackpot, and very reasonably priced food and drinks. The sound system was perfect—not too loud, yet it provided excellent coverage throughout the show grounds. It was also announced that more than $3,000 was raised for Stockhands Horses for Healing.” https://www.stockhands.org/

Steak N' Shake Super Saturday Car Show:

So far this season, the weather has not been kind to the Steak ‘n Shake Super Saturday Car Show in Newark. The May show was canceled because of the weather, and Saturday’s wet conditions kept attendance low. Even so, the show went on, and a number of Hi-Way Starz members turned out to support the event.

Jeff Tolley's Cadillac received Best Paint, Gerald Wicker got Best Modern 2001 - 2006, Bubba Hettinger Best Truck, and Jerry Jurdin's 1990 Chevy Chevelle Malibu took home Best of Show.

Here are Bubba Hettinger’s photos from the event.

Grace Community Fellowship Country BBQ, Fun Fair & Car Show:

The Grace Community Fellowship Church in Radnor hosted its 2nd Annual Country BBQ, Fun Fair, and Car Show on Sunday evening. It was truly a family event, featuring a petting zoo, bounce house, fire truck display from Tri-Twp FD, and tractor rides for the kids.

The church served a barbecue dinner featuring pulled chicken or pulled pork, along with your choice of coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, a cookie, and a drink for just $10.

Car show registration was also $10 and included a chance to win one of many door prizes. A raffle was also held for a tool chest cart. The show attracted 57 vehicles this year. Proceeds from the car show, food sales, and raffle benefit the church’s Costa Rica mission team.

Five awards were presented at the end of the show. These included Best Truck, Best Hot Rod, Best Classic, People’s Choice Runner-Up, and People’s Choice.

Sam Reda’s 1977 Chevy K-10 earned Best Truck honors.

James Wood’s 1973 Volkswagen Beetle received the Best Classic award.

Pete Lieb’s 1962 Hemi Dodge Dart Station Wagon was selected as Best Hot Rod

People’s Choice Runner-Up went to Sam Foos and his 1957 Ford Skyliner.

Gary Green’s 1965 Chevy Impala SS took home the People’s Choice award.

Here are the rest of the cars, trucks, and motorcycles that participated in the car show:

Congratulations to Grace Community Fellowship Church for hosting a successful event. Between the family activities, great barbecue, and car show, it was a wonderful way to spend a hot and humid Sunday evening in late June.

By all accounts, the Barrett-Jackson Auction at the Ohio Expo Center was a huge success. I didn’t hear a single negative comment about the event. Kudos to Mick, Drew, Arch, and Phil, who had the opportunity to drive vehicles across the auction block. I’m sure it’s an experience they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Here’s hoping Barrett-Jackson makes Columbus a permanent stop on its annual tour, just as Goodguys has. That would further cement Central Ohio’s reputation as one of the premier car communities in the Midwest.

And finally, the weather certainly didn’t cooperate this weekend. But, as the old saying goes, “The show must go on.” Despite the rain, the Central Ohio car community made the most of it and wasn’t about to let a few showers spoil the fun.

The weather is expected to make a complete turnaround this week, with afternoon highs climbing into the mid- to upper 90s by midweek. If you’re heading out to a cruise-in, car show, or Independence Day celebration, be sure to stay hydrated, take advantage of the shade when you can, and keep an eye on your fellow enthusiasts. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday weekend! (forecast.weather.gov)

This week’s roaming reporters for CarShowTalk.com include Jeff Shankle, Bubba Hettinger, Doug Glassburn, Kevin Foust, Russ Annis, Dave and Jackie Hiles, Scott Harrington, Dale Pearce, Tom Lawrence, and Arch Mayer. As always, thank you to everyone who submitted photos, results, and event information this week. Your contributions help tell the story of Central Ohio’s automotive community and make News & Notes possible.

Have a great week, stay safe and keep those wheels rolling.
