NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

This week, the Der Dutchman Cruise-In traded the cool temperatures of the first three weeks for standing water and soggy ground. According to Wayne Nicely, who manages the cruise-in, the area received more than eight inches of rain over the past week. The excessive rainfall forced the closure of the northern end of the main field and several other parking areas.

The rain fall created additional challenges. The restaurant was unable to bring its food truck to the concession stand, resulting in no food or drinks being available. As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one evening, a car caught fire while entering the cruise-in.

Despite the mud and unexpected drama, the event still attracted an impressive 300 vehicles. And while the grounds were far from ideal, the weather itself could not have been much better. The rain finally gave way to a pleasant evening, making it a great night to be out enjoying the cruise-in, even if it was a little squishy underfoot.

Despite the soggy conditions, there were still plenty of vehicles and smiling faces to be found throughout the cruise-in. Here’s a collection of photos from the evening courtesy of Jeff Shankle and yours truly.

The weather this weekend was the complete opposite of Memorial Day weekend, with sunny skies, low humidity, and a refreshing breeze. The near-perfect conditions were reflected in attendance numbers across Central Ohio, as many shows topped the 100-vehicle mark and parking lots filled early.

The FBC (First Baptist Church Grove City) Car, Truck, & Motorcycle Show:

Dan “Boots” Longenette and the Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride Team were in Grove City on Saturday hosting the 10th Annual FBC (First Baptist Church) Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show. All proceeds from the event benefit Honor Flight, helping veterans visit the memorials built in their honor in Washington, D.C.

The show featured a 50/50 raffle, door prizes, and live entertainment from Driving Guitars, keeping participants and spectators entertained throughout the day.

Thanks to the outstanding weather, 139 vehicles were officially registered, with another dozen or so vehicles attending but not entering the judging. The strong turnout made the 10th Annual FBC Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show one of the larger local events of the weekend.

At the conclusion of the show, Boots presented 88 awards, consisting of a mix of traditional trophies and unique Bluetooth speakers designed to resemble classic cars.

Here are some of the top award winners from the day.

By unanimous choice of the judges, Best of Show honors were awarded to Bennett Schellhaas and his beautiful 1951 Ford pickup.

Here are more of the 139+ cars, trucks, and motorcycles that turn out for the FBC Car, Truck & Motorcycle show:

Central Ohio Cruise-In:

Hosted by Centerburg Boy Scout Troop 382, the Central Ohio Cruise-In took place Saturday at Centerburg High School and attracted exactly 100 vehicles.

The show’s award format was a little different than most events. Rather than selecting a single Best of Show winner, organizers presented 20 identical Best in Show awards. Ten recipients were chosen by members of the Boy Scout troop, while the remaining ten were selected by the adult judging team. The unique approach gave both the Scouts and experienced judges an opportunity to recognize their favorite vehicles.

Here are some of the rides Bryan Mauger captured from the event.

Dog Face K9s Car, Truck, & Bike Show:

Zenith Kustoms hosted its 3rd Annual Dog Face K9s Car, Truck & Bike Show on Saturday at Quaker Steak & Lube in Columbus. The event benefits Dog Face K9s, an organization dedicated to training veterans and service dogs into self-supporting teams.

The show attracted 103 registered vehicles and featured a wide variety of cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Among the local award winners, Dale Pearce and Doug Glassburn each received Top 20 honors.

Best Truck was awarded to Rod Scott and his eye-catching 1958 Dodge D100 Sweptside pickup.

Bling Amobi Breezy and his 2007 Corvette received the show’s top honor and one of two custom guitar giveaways presented during the awards ceremony.

Doug Glassburn and Dave Bratton shared these photos from the event.

Cruise-In • Brews Car Show:

Another Saturday car show was the Cruise-In • Brews show that took place at the Combustion Brewery & Taproom in Pickerington. Sponsored by the Combustion Brewery & Taproom, Stakes and Cakes, and the Pickerington Lions Club the show was administered by Big Dawg and the C-Town Cruisers. The show registered more than 100 vehicles.

Hi-Way Starz members Dave O'Brien, Jeff Tolley, and Bubba Hettinger all went home with Top 35 awards.

The First Place Award went to Jimmy Cooper with a 1986 Chevy C10.

Here's a glimpse of the cars the participated in the event from Jeff Tolley and Bubba Hettinger.

Chillicothe VA Spring Fest Car Show:

Based on a recommendation, several friends decided to give the Chillicothe VA Spring Fest Car Show a try.

The event asked participants to preregister, with only 40 spaces initially advertised. However, attendance far exceeded expectations, with more than 110 vehicles ultimately filling the show field. Registration was free, and participants were treated to live music, free food, and a well-organized venue with plenty of amenities.

Awards were limited, with approximately a dozen being presented.

Steve Elam took home Best Bike, while Best of Show went to the 1968 Mercury Cougar of Robert Clay.

One participant found himself in an unusual situation, receiving Best Truck, Most Unique, and People’s Choice honors. While appreciative of the recognition, he noted that he would have preferred to see the additional awards spread among other participants. His view was that when awards are limited, recognizing more owners can create a better overall experience and leave more participants heading home with a smile.

The beautiful weather helped bolster attendance at the variety of Cars & Coffee gatherings and cruise-ins that took place across Central Ohio over the weekend. Sunshine, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures made for ideal conditions to get the classics, hot rods, muscle cars, and specialty vehicles out on the road.

Here is a sampling of the vehicles that turned out for the Marysville and Licking County Cars & Coffee.

At the Marysville Cars & Coffee, Jeff Shankle’s 1929 Roadster was selected as the event’s Best Car. In addition to the honor, he received a Sud’s Brothers gift basket loaded with goodies and a $204 gift card.

After a soggy and unpredictable Memorial Day weekend, Central Ohio’s car and bike community was rewarded with nearly perfect weather and outstanding attendance. If this weekend is any indication, June is shaping up to be one of the busiest—and hopefully most enjoyable—months of the 2026 season, although only time will tell.

This week’s contributors include Jeff Tolley, Jeff Shankle, Dale Pearce, Bryan Mauger, Bubba Hettinger, Dave Bratton, Doug Glassburn, and Kevin Foust. As always, thank you to everyone who submitted photos, results, and event information this week. Your contributions help tell the story of Central Ohio’s automotive community and make News & Notes possible.

Have a great week, stay safe and keep those wheels rolling.

Thanks Walter! Glad to hear you look forward to the posts each week.

I'm pretty sure my posting about canceled car shows and Der Dutchman's restricted parking last week triggered Facebook's algorithm for spam.
