NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

It was another cool Thursday evening for the Der Dutchman Cruise-In in Plain City. There was some concern the event might be canceled after two days of steady rain left portions of the field saturated. Fortunately, aside from a few wet spots near the concession stand and pavilion, the grounds were dry enough to accommodate the 264 vehicles that turned out for the weekly gathering. As usual, Wayne had the few muddy areas coned off, keeping cars out of trouble and the field in good shape.

One of the more interesting vehicles on hand was an Aston Martin DBX707 luxury SUV. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, derived from a Mercedes-AMG engine and extensively reworked by Aston Martin, cranks out 697 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. The DBX707 can rocket from 0-60 mph in approximately 3.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 193 mph. That should make it easy for Mom to get the kids to soccer practice and dance lessons on time.

Another interesting vehicle was Dan Howard’s 1940 Plymouth pickup. The truck had belonged to Dan’s grandfather and spent the last 15 years tucked away in a garage. After doing the work necessary to bring it back to life and fitting it with a set of 15-inch wheels, Dan proudly drove the pickup to the cruise-in for its first outing in many years. Perhaps the most unique feature is the bench seat, which is upholstered using material from one of Dan’s old couches—a true example of hot-rodding ingenuity and recycling at its finest.

Mike Hermann spent the winter reworking the battery installation in the trunk of his 1964 Plymouth Belvedere to match the factory configuration exactly as it would have appeared when the car rolled off the assembly line. The attention to detail and craftsmanship involved in the project were truly impressive.

Here are a few more vehicles that were on hand for Thursday evening's cruise-in.

As a side note, VW enthusiasts are hoping to increase Volkswagen participation at the Der Dutchman Cruise-In. Their goal is to encourage owners of VW models to attend on the fourth Thursday of each month throughout the cruise-in season. If you’ve got a Volkswagen sitting in the garage, consider bringing it out and joining the gathering. The plan is for the VWs to park together along the back rows, beginning this Thursday, May 28.

Feast of the Flowering Moon Car Show:

Rain throughout the day Friday and into Saturday morning forced the cancellation of several events and the postponement of two others for the second time. One show that carried on rain or shine was the Feast of the Flowering Moon Car Show in downtown Chillicothe.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, 42 vehicles registered for the show. Dale Pearce said he managed to avoid rain on both the trip to and from the event, although showers fell for approximately two hours during the show itself. Nine awards were presented, with Dale’s 1967 Corvette Stingray earning the Best Paint Award and a custom paint-can trophy.

Top honors went to Ty Vickers and his 1966 Corvette, which captured the Feast Choice Award.

Delaware Cruise Nights:

Delayed by a week because of the Delaware Arts Festival, the second Delaware Cruise Night of the season took place Saturday evening. Unlike many events across Central Ohio earlier in the day, participants enjoyed dry weather and pleasant conditions throughout the evening.

Bryan Mauger captured some of the cars and trucks that lined the streets of downtown Delaware.

Moonshine Festival Car Show:

Sunday’s weather once again dampened (no pun intended) the car show schedule. Heavy rains left the parking grounds at Velvet Ice Cream in Utica underwater, forcing the cancellation of the Ye Olde Mill Rod Run. The RevvedUp Fun Car Show at the Harrisburg Pike O’Reilly Auto Parts was also postponed for the second time. Despite the soggy conditions, the Moonshine Festival and Car Show in New Straitsville went on as scheduled.

Bubba Hettinger and Dave and Jackie Hiles both returned home with awards from the show.

Bubba Hettinger shared photos from the event, including the cars, the festival atmosphere, and perhaps the day’s most unusual attraction—a chance to hold a fox.

Revive Baptist Church Memorial Day Car Show:

Another show that ignored the weather on Sunday was the Revive Baptist Church Memorial Day Car Show in London. This was the third year for the event, and every year it seems to come with at least a threat of rain.

Despite the questionable forecast, approximately 20 cars and motorcycles were on hand. Greg Glass received the Best 1970-1989 award with his 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Tom Lawrence attended the show and shared photos from the event.

Rogers Garage Memorial Day Car Show:

The weekend’s rain took a toll on any parking area that wasn’t paved. The Rogers Garage Memorial Day Car Show was forced to limit attendance for both participants and spectators because portions of the property remained too wet from the recent rainfall.

Organizers asked attendees to arrive in two shifts, with those whose last names began with A through K attending from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and those with last names beginning with L through Z attending from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. How that system was going to be enforced was anyone’s guess.

I had planned to attend the show, but decided to sit this one out. Between the muddy parking conditions and the possibility of a logistical headache, it seemed like it could turn into a big mess—literally and figuratively.

Based on the photos Jeff Tolley shared, organizers appeared to keep most vehicles on the gravel due to the wet conditions, although a handful of overflow cars were parked on the grass. Jeff said the parking turned out better than expected.

Lithopolis Memorial Day Car Show:

The Village of Lithopolis hosted its annual downtown Memorial Day Car Show on Monday, with Shaun “Big Dawg” Sanders and the C-Town Cruisers once again handling the event. A total of 107 vehicles were registered for the show.

Among the major award winners were Terry Bach, whose 1969 Ford Shelby GT500 received the Fireman’s Choice Award.

Brian Hall's 1998 Chevrolet Corvette captured the People’s Choice Award.

Taking home Best of Show honors was Jim Perrault and his 1960 Ford Edsel.

Shane Tracy was kind enough to grant permission for carshowtalk.com to use his photos from the show.

America 250 Celebration Car Show:

The parking lot of Middleburg Community Church in East Liberty was the site of the American 250 Celebration Car Show on Memorial Day. The gathering was more of a casual cruise-in than a traditional car show, with approximately 35 vehicles stopping by throughout the afternoon.

There was no judging or trophy presentation, but participants were treated to complimentary hot dogs and chips. Dave Bratton was there and shared the following photos from the event.

Mount Victory Memorial Day Car Show & Petroliana Swap:

I’ll finish this week’s News & Notes with one of my favorite Central Ohio car events, the Mount Victory Memorial Day Car Show & Petroliana Swap Meet. The rain finally stopped, and apparently the front yards dried out enough to welcome a strong turnout. The show registered 152 vehicles, with many more on the grounds that chose not to register.

Tom Lawrence was on hand to capture the sights from this annual Memorial Day tradition. Here are his photos from the event.

Whew! The weather certainly made for one of the more interesting Memorial Day weekends in recent memory. Despite the rain and muddy conditions, there was still plenty of Central Ohio car activity—a tribute to the dedication of our local car community.

This week’s contributors include Jeff Tolley, Dale Pearce, Russ Annis, Tom Lawrence, Bryan Mauger, Bubba Hettinger, Dave Bratton, and Shane Tracy. Their willingness to venture out in less-than-ideal weather allowed the rest of us to enjoy a glimpse of this weekend’s Central Ohio car scene. Thank you all for your contributions.

Have a great week, stay safe and keep those wheels rolling.
