Upcoming Central Ohio Car Events June 12 – 14

When I posted last week's list of events, there wasn't much on the schedule at the start of the week. By the end of the week, however, two events had been canceled and five new events added. I think this is going to be the norm for the rest of the season so check back often, especially towards the end of the week.

News and Notes:

BREAKING NEWS: I Just received messages from two readers that there will be NO Jack Maxton Friday Night Cruise-Ins this year. Word has it the dealership will be under new ownership soon.

The one and only cruise I've done so far this year is the Senior Celebration Street Cruise and Great Garage Door Contest in Obetz. The purpose of the cruise was to honor the Senior Graduates of Hamilton Township High School and the senior citizens of Obetz. It was an interesting cruise in that it offered awards for Best Paint, Most Unique, Best Modern, Best Classic, Best Overall, and Best Motorcycle as voted on by the spectators along the cruise route. There was also a participation award advertised for all those that registered for the cruise.

My car wasn't selected for any of the special awards, however, I did receive a $25 BP gas card in the mail this week for participating in the cruise. Not bad for a 45 minutes drive around Obetz!

The beautiful weather this weekend, especially on Sunday, made it all but impossible to shelter at home.

Two car meets on Sunday, one at the Target store in Powell, Ohio, and the other at the Coldstone Creamery on Polaris Parkway in Columbus, took advantage of the nice weather to attract more than 130 cars. I stopped by both meets to take photos and reconnect with friends.

After a two month absence, Dick "Hot Dog" Ryman and the Heart of Ohio Antique Center in Springfield, Ohio held it's first cruise-in of the year. With 148 vehicles in attendance, the cruise-in has the distinction of being the biggest event so far in Central Ohio.

Cars & Coffee: After shutting down for twelve weeks due to the coronavirus, Columbus Cars and Coffee at Lennox Town Center is considering starting back up this weekend. Nothing has been officially set in stone so stay tuned. The other Columbus Cars and Coffee has the Esoteric Open house on its schedule. I spoke with a team member from Esoteric on Monday and they're still undecided about hosting the event this Saturday. I hope to post updates on both events later in the week.

Der Dutchman Plain City: Just received a text from Wayne Nisly Monday evening. He's got approval to start the Der Dutchman cruise-ins on June 18. Yippee!

A few more events were added to the Save the Dates for 2020 page this week. The most notable of these is the Empty Pockets Cruisers Armed Forces Day show. The show has been rescheduled for August 8. Unfortunately, there were also some cancellations. This page is still updated pretty much daily so check-in often.

The link to the pictures you took at two car cruise ins or shows doesn't go anywhere. I love to see pictures. I'm near Dayton, but drive to more distant cruises when I know there are going to be enough cars in the classic category to be worth the drive. Your pages helped me last year.

" I stopped by both meets to take photosOpens in a new window and reconnect with friends."

I appreciate and like your set up for keeping track of cruises and shows.

Hi Fred, Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't realize I had forgotten to publish the page of car photos. I could see the page since I'm the admin. The link should work now. Please let me know if you still have an issue.

The Lennox cars and coffee has unofficially been meeting for several weeks now. Memorial Day weekend a very large turn out showed up. I would say close to 150 cars, many of which we have never seen showed up last Saturday am.

Thanks for the updates, Kim. I took my " Black Beauty " ( 1946 Chevrolet Coupe ) to the Heritage Center near Springfield on Sunday. Awesome weather, nice people, minimal traffic on Route 40, no charge to attend, good music, got a nice shady spot for myself. Can't beat it. Since DeWine has re opened up PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING except for large venue theaters ( The Ohio and Palace in Downtown, for example, which have about 2,700 seat capacity ) and maybe a few other things, I think car show people and organizers are realizing that we all need to get back to normal and get our lives back . Thank goodness !! See you all at the shows , and yes, do stay safe out there.

Hi Clement, You're welcome regarding the updates. I went to a Heart of Ohio cruise-in last year. The day I went, there was about 60 cars. It was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I wish there were a few more trees for shade.

Now that the World Health Organization came out today and said the asymptomatic spread of Covid-19 is rare, it seems to me there is no good excuse not to resume car shows and cruise-ins.

I just made the call to Maxtons to verify the rumor that there are no car shows at Maxtons. Rumor is they been sold.

    Another loss...

Hi Dan, I called Maxton's about three weeks ago about their cruise-in. The person I talked to told me no decision had been made about having them this year. She said they were waiting on the governor to lift the restriction on gatherings. I haven't heard the rumors that the dealership was sold. That's huge news if true.

Saturday the 30th was the biggest turnout I've ever seen at Lennox Cars and Coffee. I've been stirring the pot on their Facebook page for folks to come on out and they did. Let's make this Saturday even bigger.

We need more old guys in old cars out to teach the young-ins a thing or two!

You’ve got the cleanest black car I’ve ever seen. Even after it’s been driven on a dirt road and parked in grass it’s somehow still spotless. I say you go to the Esoteric one and flaunt your detailing skills.

        1. Kim Hawksworth

Hi Jim, I appreciate the nice compliment about my car. As you know, it's almost impossible to keep a black car clean for more than 10 minutes. My car is no exception.

Funny you mentioned Esoteric. I have to give them 95% of the credit for my car's appearance. They're the shop I used to do the paint correction, paint protection film, and ceramic coating. I owe it all to them. I just attempt to maintain their great work.
