NEWS AND NOTES

This week's News and Notes covers events from Alexandria to Sunbury, Ohio. It includes a show that's just a little different than most.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

283 cars made it out to the Der Dutchman Cruise-In in Plain City, Ohio this past Thursday.

The car that caught my attention this week was this 1931 Buick 96 Opera Coupe belonging to Tom and Dana Kromer.

Here are some of the other beautiful rides from the cruise-in:

Honda Motorsports Bike & Car Night/NAPA Pop-Up Cruise:

Two car meet-ups took place on Friday evening. One at Honda Motorsport in Marysville, Ohio, and the other at the NAPA Auto Parts store in Hilliard, Ohio.

This month Honda Motorsports had about 20 motorcycles show up and only seven cars. Food was still free from the Triple P Barbeque Co. food truck and so was the opportunity to have your motorcycle dyno'd.

There were more than six times the number of cars at the NAPA Pop-up Cruise. Attendance surpassed 45 cars during the evening.

There weren't any kids riding bikes in between the cars at this meet-up.

Heels & Wheels Car Show: (WARNING SOME ADULT CONTENT)

The Vanity Gentlemen's Club in Columbus, Ohio hosted its 10th Annual Heels & Wheels Car Show on Saturday.

Registration was $15 and included a door prize ticket. I will say Heels & Wheels had the best door prizes of any show I've attended this season.

One of the door prizes was a golf bag! You don't see too many of those given away at car shows.

The show ended up registering 78 cars. There were awards not only for the cars and bikes but also for the ladies.

Voted on by the crowd, the ladies competed for Best Breasts, Best Butt, Best Legs, and Hottie of the Show.

The ladies selected the cars to receive awards. The awards included Best Back Seat, Best Topless Ride, Best Rear End, Best Babe Magnet -- you get the picture. Not your typical Best GM, Best Ford, or Best Truck awards. There was also a Best of Show for the cars/trucks and a Best of Show for the motorcycles.

Food and refreshments could be purchased from the food stand set up outside the club. I'm told the hot dogs were especially good. Of course, adult beverages could be purchased inside the club.

The ladies were available to pose for photos with your car during the show. Tipping the ladies was strongly encouraged.

Here are the crowds' choices for Best Breasts, Best Butt, Best Legs, and Hottie of the Show:

The Star of the Show Award went to Jasmine for her help judging the vehicles and being the MC for the awards presentation.

THE CAR AWARDS:

THE BIKE AWARDS:

BEST OF SHOW - CARS/TRUCKS:

Kevin Foust's 1941 Dodge WC 40 Military Weapons Truck.

BEST OF SHOW - BIKES:

Bruce Hoover's 2010 Harley Electra Glide.

Crossroads Saturday and Sunday Shows:

Frank Russell and the Crossroads Events team hosted two car shows this past weekend. On Saturday they were in Newark, Ohio hosting the monthly show at the Earthworks Cafe at Newark Station.

The Veteran Owned Vehicle Award went to Mike Holcombe and his 1970 Chevy Nova "Gezr Cab".

The 1932 Ford B of Jeff Cole received the Best of Show Honors.

On Sunday, the Crossroads team traveled from Newark to Dublin, Ohio to host the Air Force One/Custom Air Skilled Trades Cruise-In.

There were 56 vehicles in attendance. Anyone who registered a vehicle received a goody bag and a free t-shirt from Air Force One/Custom Air. They also received a $5.00 discount on food and refreshments at JD's Farmhouse Cafe & Creamery food truck.

The Nationwide Children's/Sunny 95 Cool Treat Truck was also at the show passing out free cold treats.

At the end of the show, the Crossroads Team presented 31 awards. Four of those 31 awards were custom-made trophies from Air Force One for Best Car, Best Truck, Best Bike, and Best of Show.

Heny Ours received the Veteran Owned Vehicle Award with his 1949 Ford Panel Delivery Truck.

The Best Car Award went to Jim McGruder's 2020 Chevy Corvette Stingray.

The 1953 Chevy 3100 pickup belonging to Dean Maisenbacher was selected as Best Truck.

Allen Parker's 2019 Harley Davidson FLFBS Fat Boy received The Best Bike Award.

Best of Show honors went to Chris Kraner and his 1970 Ford Torino GT.

Here are the rest of the vehicles from the show:

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

There were 166 cars in attendance this week. Not bad considering how damn hot it was on Thursday.

There was a birthday celebration for Wayne Nisly who manages the cruise-in. Wayne turned 85 this week. He received a rocking chair with the name of the cruise-in engraved on the back.

We also found out that Wayne collects die-cast cars. He brought some of his collection to the cruise-in. It just so happened he received a few more cars as a birthday gift. What a coincidence.

Heels and Wheels Car and Bike Show:

On Saturday the Vanity Gentlemens Club in Columbus, Ohio hosted its 9th annual Heels and Wheels Car and Bike Show. The Garden on Bethel Rd and 7th Gear Exotics helped sponsor the show.

Held in the parking lot behind the club, the show registered 61 cars and bikes. Everyone that registered received a door prize ticket. The door prizes consisted of tools and buckets of car care products.

Adult beverages were available inside the club and food could be purchased outside at the show.

The Vanity Girls were happy to pose for photos with your car.

There were seven awards for the bikes and 11 awards for the cars plus a Best of Show. In addition to the car and Bike awards, the Vanity Girls also competed for awards. These included Best Butt, Best Breasts, Best Legs, and Overall Hottie.

Here are the motorcycle Awards:

The Car Awards:

The Best of Show Award went to Jamie Riffitt and Jackson Willoughby with a 1969 Camaro.

Purple Door Car Show:

The Purple Door Church in Grove City, Ohio held its 20th Annual Purple Door Car Show took on Saturday.

The show registered 109 cars this year. The Best of Show Award went to Ralph Carle with a 1959 Chevy El Camino.

Auto Smarts Radio Upper Deck Cruise-in:

Right around the corner from the Purple Door Show was the Upper Deck Cruise-in hosted by Auto Smarts radio.

The Show had 115 cars in attendance.

Just like Heels and Wheels, the Upper Deck Cruise-in had several lovely young ladies happy to pose for photos with your car.

For the second weekend in a row, Dale Pearce's 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup received the Best Truck Award, and Jason and Debbie Blankenship's 1959 Chevy Apache pickup took home Best of Show.

Blackwing Summer Blast Car Show:

The Blackwing Shooting Center in Delaware, Ohio held its annual Summer Blast Car Show on Saturday.

There were about 65 cars in attendance. Eleven awards were presented at the conclusion of the show.

Here's a sample of the cars that attended the show:

The Best Car in Show award went to the 1968 Chevy Camaro belonging to Tim Inscho.

Air Force One / Custom Air Skilled Trades Cruise-In:

With the help of Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smarts Radio Team, Air Force One/Custom Air held its first cruise-in at its headquarters in Dublin, Ohio on Sunday.

Air Force One (AFO) is a commercial HVAC contractor. Custom Air is the residential side of the business. The purpose of the show was to help bring awareness to the skilled trades.

There were a total of 71 cars in attendance.

Food trucks from Roosters and the Grilled Cheese Gangster provided food and refreshments during the show.

Boots and Mindy Drayer broadcast their radio show live from the cruise-in.

During the show, someone with the help of another cruiser vandalized the license plate on my Camaro.

Unlike the cocaine left at the White House, there is overwhelming evidence of who the culprits were in this vicious attack on my car.

Getting back to the cruise-in.

Along with the usual trophies for the picks from Auto Smarts, Pepsi, Jegs, and Cruisin' Classics, were custom, handmade trophies. Members of the AFO/Custom Air team selected the cars to receive the custom trophies.

Here are the Auto Smarts "Top" Picks:

The AFO/Custom Air Custom Trophy Picks:

Best of Show went to Pete Lieb and his 1962 Chevy 409 Bel Air.

Other Area Car Shows:

  • Sabina Park Car Show had about 100 cars and trucks in attendance on Sunday. Awards were presented to the "Top" 25. Dale Pearce took home one Top 25 award with his 1950 Chevy 3100.

  • Several hundred cars attended the 43rd Annual Poor Man's Nationals at Pastime Park in Plain City, Ohio on Sunday

That's it for this week. Here are the folks that helped put together the News and Notes:

  • Jeff Shankle
  • Dave Bratton
  • Dale Pearce
  • Russ Annis

I hope everyone has a good week! I'll see you again next week with a new report.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

For the third week in a row, attendance at the Der Dutchman Cruise-In in Plain City, Ohio broke the 300 mark. This week it was 325 to be exact.

Once again lots of great-looking cars and trucks were in attendance.

Mark your calendars. There will be a celebration of life for Wayne's late wife, Luella, on Thursday, June 8. Wayne would love to see 500 cars attend.

Heart of Grove City Spring Warm-Up Car Show:

Shaun "Big Dawg" Saunders and the C-Town Cruisers were in downtown Grove City, Ohio on Saturday hosting the Heart of Grove City Spring Warm-up Car Show.

The event had a good turnout registering 108 vehicles during the afternoon.

Quite a few heads were turned when Dale Pearce pulled up in a new mid-engine Corvette.

Rumors began circulating that Dale had lost his mind and traded in "Ole Blue" for the new Corvette. Those rumors were quickly put to rest when everyone realized Dale was driving Dan "Boots" Longenette's new Corvette. The best part was watching Dale try to get out of the car.

Getting back to the show, awards were presented to the "Top" 35 cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The "Best Of" awards included Best Bike, Best Truck, Best MoPo(Most Potential)/Rat Rod, Best Club Participation (Larry Bickers Memorial Award), Junior Cruiser Award, and of course Best of Show.

Here are the "Best Of" winners:

The Larry Bickers Award for Best Club Participation went to the Old Goats Car Club. Larry along with Paul and Lynn Raduege and Frank Russell were the original founding members of the club which is now around 240 members strong. Larry passed away several years ago and Paul passed away last year leaving Lynn and Frank as the remaining founding members.

Kenny G and Lynn Raduege accepting the Larry Bickers Memorial Award

The Best of Show Award went to our good friend, Dan Varner, with his 1964 "Survivor" Chevy Impala.

Here are the Top 35:

Moonshine Festival Car, Truck, and Bike Show

About 90 cars attended the Moonshine Festival Car, Truck, and Bike Show in downtown New Straitsville, Ohio on Sunday.

Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 took home the Best GM award.

Best of Show went to the 1954 Corvette belonging to Steve Kidwell and Nancy.

Ye Olde Mill Rod Run & Picnic:

The Newark Rodders Car Club hosted its 52nd Annual Rod Run & Picnic at the Velvet Ice Cream Ye Olde Mill in Utica, Ohio on Sunday.

The beautiful weather and ice cream brought out hundreds of cars to the event. Dave Bratton said he arrived at 9:45 in the morning and was number 369! The final registration number ended up being well over 400 cars.

The horse-drawn carriage arriving and departing did create a lot of dust for cars parked close to the road. And of course, this time of year the fuzz balls from the cottonwood trees are not car-friendly.

There was no Best of Show, however, there were two memorial trophies. One in honor of Barb Wilson who started the show 52 years ago and one for her grandson. The Barb Wilson Award went to Barry McPeek and his 1932 Ford Sedan. William Brown and his 1979 Mustang Pace Car received the Memorial Award for the grandson.

Dave Bratton was kind enough to share the photos he took at the Rod Run & Picnic.

Antique Car Show and Petroliana Swap:

I had the pleasure of attending my first Memorial Day Antique Car Show and Petroliana Swap in Mount Victory, Ohio on Monday.

What a nice way to spend Memorial Day. Registration was free and optional. There were 192 cars registered by 1 PM with probably another 50-75 cars in attendance that didn't register. There were door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Food trucks and the Methodist Church across Rt 31 were available for food and refreshments.

Almost all the residences around the show area allowed cars to park at the end of their front yard and driveway. There was one grumpy neighbor, however, who had his entire front yard taped off.

Mount Victory is best known for its antique shops. However, the most impressive display of memorabilia is the oil and gas collection contained in the outbuildings on Donald Houchin's property. It's definitely a walk back in time.

Here are some of the cars and scenes from the Mount Victory show:

Rogers Garage Memorial Day Car Meet:

Another Memorial Day car meet took place at Rogers Garage in Johnstown, Ohio. It's estimated that 200 or more cars attended the meet on Monday. Someone compared it to Der Dutchman on a slower night.

Here's a slideshow of the cars from that event:

Other Central Ohio Car Events:

  • The Memorial Day Car Show in downtown Lithopolis, Ohio hosted by the C-Town Cruisers registered 175 vehicles. Best of Show went to Bob Kraft and his 1955 Chevy 210.

  • The Pauley Family Car Show Benefit in Sabina, Ohio on Sunday had about 50 cars in attendance.
  • The New Holland Community Park Celebration Day Car Show registered 75 cars on Saturday.
  • On Saturday, the Feast of the Flowering Moon Cruise-In in Downtown Chillicothe, Ohio broke the 100 mark with 104 cars.
  • I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Springfield Swap Meet and Car Show at the Clark County Fairgrounds. Three days of beautiful weather made for a lot of cars and lots of visitors. Our good friend, Jeff Shankle, posted over 450 photos from the event on his Facebook page. Here's just a small sample of the cars from the weekend.

Whew! A Holiday weekend and great weather made for an exceptionally long report this week. Next week will return to our regularly scheduled Monday posting and a little shorter report.

I want to thank Dale Pearce, Dave Bratton, Anthony Musick, Jeff Shankle, Bryan Mauer, Kevin Foust, and Phil Monroe for their contributions to this week's report.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Thursday Cruise-In:

This week 316 plus cruisers celebrated the birthday of Wayne Nisly at the Der Dutchman Cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio. For those of you who may not know Wayne very well, he started the cruise-in back in May of 2012 and has been managing it every week since. Wayne turned 84 on Wednesday. Everyone gathered around the food shed at the end of the evening to sing Happy Birthday to him.

Instead of raffling off baked goods this week, everyone was treated to a cupcake and ice cream to celebrate Wayne's Birthday.

Autosmarts Cruise and Ride at Ten Pin Alley:

Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride team made a stop at Ten Pin Alley in Hilliard, Ohio on Friday Evening. The show quickly filled up the parking lot with some cars having to park in between rows. All told the show registered 77 cars. Best of Show honors went to Chris Kramer and his 1970 Ford Torino GT.

To see more cars from the Ten Pin Alley Show, CLICK HERE.

Columbus Cars and Coffee at the City:

A wedding commitment Saturday afternoon limited my event choices for the day. I was bummed I couldn't make Heels and Wheels this year. It's always a fun and different show. Having the morning free, I decided to stop by Columbus Cars and Coffee at the City Apartments.

The nice weather Saturday morning brought out a nice mix of vehicles to the weekly cruise. I got the opportunity to see an all-electric Rivian pickup in person. Definitely not your father's pickup truck.

Here's a sampling of the other cars that stopped by CC&C Saturday morning:

Purple Door Car Show:

The Grove City Methodist Church's annual Purple Door Car Show set an attendance record on Saturday with 160 registered vehicles. The show presented "Top 40" awards along with 10 "Special" awards. Someone made the comment that out of 160 cars 140 of them were trophy worthy. Glad I wasn't involved with the judging.

Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup received the Best Chevy award.

The Best of Show award went to Hank Schreck with a 1970 Chevy Chevelle.

CLICK HERE for more vehicles from the Purple Door Car Show.

Poor Man's Nationals:

On Sunday, the Buckeye Rod Builders hosted the 42nd Annual Poor Man's Nationals at Pastime Park in Plain City, Ohio. If memory serves me correctly, the last time the show charged a registration fee and presented awards was in 2017. Since then the event has become a big cruise-in and swap meet.

I stopped by the Nationals on Sunday morning for about 90 minutes. I think the weather slowed the number of cars coming in early. Attendance was starting to pick up when I left at 11 AM. I have no doubt attendance surpassed the 200 mark by the time the event ended at 3 PM.

For more from the Poor Man's Nationals, CLICK HERE.

Auto Smarts Cruise and Ride at Moose Lodge 1427:

The Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride crew hosted another show on Sunday at Moose Lodge 1427 in Westerville, Ohio. For Dan "Boots" Longenette, this was the third event he was involved with this weekend (Tin Pen Alley on Friday, Purple Door on Saturday, and Moose Lodge on Sunday).

The show registered 46 vehicles. Best of Show went to Dick Kleinhenz with a 1969 "Pro Street" Chevy Camaro.

A second show is scheduled at the Moose Lodge on October 2nd so mark your calendars.

To see the rest of the rides from the Moose Lodge 1427 show, CLICK HERE.

Other Area Shows:

  • I heard Heels and Wheels at the Vanity Gentlemens Club in Columbus had a good turned out on Saturday with around 90 cars. I'm still bummed I missed it. Oh well, it was a lovely wedding.
  • Dan Kirk and his 1969 Dodge Dart GT took Best of Show honors at the Pinecrest Car Show and Cruise-In at the Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbus on Saturday.
  • Dale Pearce, Tom Stewart and Cadillac Mac made the trek down to Sabina, Ohio on Sunday for the Sabina Park Show. The show had 67 cars in attendance. Tom and Cadillac Mac received Top 25 awards and Dale got DJ's Choice. Best of Show went to a 1949 Cadillac.

Important Info about the Mechanicsburg First Responder's Car Show:

I received an email from Damon Reese this weekend. Damon is involved with the Mechanicsburg First Responder's Car Show scheduled for September 3rd. According to Damon, there's been some confusion that the Mechanicsburg Lions Club Show that took place on July 9th replaced the First Responder's Show. This is NOT the case. The First Responder's show to benefit police/fire and first responders is STILL scheduled for September 3. Please pass the word.

I want to once again thank Jeff Shankle, Dave Bratton, and Dale Pearce for their help preparing this week's report. They're a great team!

[shortcode-weather-atlas city_selector=2374169 layout="horizontal" header="Central Ohio Forecast" background_color="#efefef" text_color="#336699" font_size="16px" style="font-family:Verdana, Geneva, "DejaVu Sans", sans-serif;" daily=5 current=0]

2

A few weekly cruise-ins have dropped off the schedule, however, this weekend and next still have a full slate of events. Things will begin to wind down in October.

NEWS AND NOTES:

Der Dutchman:

The Der Dutchman Cruise-in experienced another good week of attendance with 287 cars Thursday evening. Two outstanding cars, a 1940 Woody wagon that won best of show at the Zucchinifest and West Jefferson Ox Roast last week, and a 50's Cadillac paid a visit this week.

Only three more cruise-ins left for this year. If you haven't made it to one yet, time is starting to run out.

Speaking of Der Dutchman, they will hold their Coffee and Donuts Cruise-in this Saturday morning. It's a great excuse to enjoy a cup of coffee, one of their famous long John donuts and hang out with your car buddies.

Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts Car Show:

After battling rain the previous two months, The Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts Car Show in Marysville, Ohio finally got a descent evening of weather.

Forty-two cars showed up Friday evening for the monthly show with 35 of them registering. The show raised $180 for the Milford Center and Marysville food pantries.

This month the manager of Advanced Auto Parts selected the following four cars for awards.

Empty Pockets Cruisers Patriots Day Car Show:

The Empty Pockets Cruisers held their Patriots Day Car Show on Saturday at the Hilliard Community Center in Hilliard, Ohio.

This was the club's third show of the season and the first time hosting a show at the Hilliard Community center. Normally the club hosts three shows a season but in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 they added this extra show.

The Community center turned out to be a nice venue for a car show. There was plenty of parking, clean restrooms and some shade if you wanted it. The club reached out to large number of food trucks but only two showed up on Saturday. I overheard some people complaining that the service from both trucks was a little slow.

The club registered 134 cars and presented 50 awards. The special awards at this event included Most Patriotic, First Responders Choice, Sponsors Choice, DJ's Choice, and Best of Show.

Best of Show award went to Dean and LuAnn Mafsenbacher and their 1953 Chevy 3100 pickup. The Mafsenbacher's truck also took the Best of Show honors at the Empty Pockets Armed Forces Day show in May.

All in all it was another great event put on by the Empty Pockets Cruisers. The club's final show of the season will be their annual Trunk or Treat event, one of my favorites, on October 16.

If you'd like to see more from the Patriots Day Show, CLICK HERE.

Ohio Corvette Club Alliance Corvette Gathering:

On Sunday I had the opportunity to participate in my very first Corvette Gathering in downtown Lancaster, Ohio.

The Gathering is put on by the Alliance of Corvette clubs from around the state of Ohio. It pretty much amounts to a big cruise-in for Corvettes. There's no judging or awards. For the $15 registration fee, you received a nice participation plaque and a raffle ticket for door prizes. The event also included a silent auction. Vendors were there selling Corvette related paraphernalia. After skipping last year because of Covid, this was the 16th year for the Corvette Gathering.

The Alliance registered 310 Corvettes, however, it was closer to 360 that participated. West Main Street in the historic district of downtown Lancaster is where the event is held. The street is closed between S. Columbus Street and S. High Street. There's a nice hill to climb as you walk towards S. High Street.

The newer Corvettes pretty much dominated the Gathering. Someone told me they only counted about 25 Corvettes from 1970 and older. I think there was more than that but the newer Corvettes were definitely in abundance. I saw quite a few out-of-state cars. The farthest away someone traveled that I saw was South Dakota.

If you like Corvettes and want to spend a relaxing day shooting the breeze with other Corvette owners, the Corvette Gathering is the place to be.

CLICK HERE to see a bunch of Corvettes from the Gathering.

Motts Military Driving for Daisy Car Show:

The Pepsi's Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride crew were at the Motts Military Museum in Groveport, Ohio on Sunday for the Motts Military Driving for Daisy Car Show.

The show registered around 100 cars. The Best of Show award went to Jim Bickel and his 1969 AMC AMX. Dale Pearce and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup took Best Truck.

CLICK HERE for more scenes from the Motts Military Driving Daisey show.

Other Area Car Shows:

I received word that the Street Elite Corvette Club's Charitable Open Car Show in Sunbury, Ohio on Saturday registered 160 cars. If anyone knows who took Best of Show, please post in the comments.

UPDATE: Sam Parks and his 1948 Chevy Pickup took the Best of Show award.

I'm told the turnout on Sunday for the All Ohio Ford Show at the Pastime Park in Plain City, Ohio was not very good. By 1 PM only 35-40 cars had registered. I understand there was no food or drink available. Very disappointing for a show with a $20 registration fee.

I want to again thank Dave Bratton and Jeff Shankle for sending information and photos on the shows they attending this weekend. It's great to have eyes, ears and cameras at the shows I'm unable to attend.
