Just when you thought the schedule couldn't have more car events, along comes Saturday and Sunday this week.

I received notice that the City Apartments have asked the organizers of Columbus Cars and Coffee at the City not to hold the weekly Saturday morning cruise-ins on OSU Football home games. Paid parking will be enforced on those days after 10 AM. The first five games are at home this season so as of now the cruise-in won't return until October 8. The organizers are working on an alternative location for football Saturdays. I will post that location as soon as it is announced.

NEWS AND NOTES

Once again a weather pattern of rain showers Saturday, Sunday, and Monday hampered the car events scheduled for the holiday weekend. I know of three shows (two of them on Labor Day) that were canceled and others that decide to take place rain or shine with lower-than-expected attendance.

Der Dutchman Thursday Cruise-In

Attendance at the Thursday evening cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio was slightly up this week from last week with 309 cars.

There were two unique vehicles in attendance. The first was a 1988 Crown Super Coach school bus its owner called the "Beast". The bus is 38 feet in length with a gross vehicle weight of 37,400 lbs and seating for 84 passengers.

The second vehicle is a sports car I'm sure most of you have never heard of called the Panoz Esperante. It was assembled in Hoschton, Georgia from 2001 to 2007. It was available in either a coupe or convertible. The power plant was engines from either Ford or GM. Everyone that helped build the car put their signature under the hood.

Zucchini Festival Car & Motorcycle Show

One of the scheduled events at The Zucchini Festival held at Fortress Obetz in Obetz, Ohio on Friday evening was the annual car and motorcycle show. This show is part of the Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride series.

The show registered just under 170 cars with an estimated 25-30 more cars in attendance that didn't register.

There were a total of 53 awards presented at the end of the show. Some of those awards included the Top 25, Automotion Picks, Best Bike, Mayor's Choice, Council's Choice, and Best of Show.

Andrew VanErt and his 1968 Chevy Chevelle took home the Best of Show honors.

CLICK HERE to see more award winners and the rest of the cars in attendance at the Zucchinifest Show.

Richwood Bank Coffee & Cars Cruise-In

The Richwood Bank in Delaware, Ohio held its final cruise-in of the season on Saturday morning. Approximately 16 cars turned out for the event. As usual, complimentary caffeinated and decaffeinated beverages were available to anyone registering a vehicle from the coffee bar inside the bank.

This month's raffle prizes included a couple of duffle bags with pizza coupons inside and bucket caddy filled with car care products and a fifth of Coopers' Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. One lucky cruiser went home not only able to clean his car but have a good time in the process.

Dublin AM Rotary Classic Car Show

Showers on Sunday morning held attendance down at the 3rd Annual Dublin AM Rotary Classic Car Show in the historic downtown Dublin, Ohio business district. When I arrived around 11 o'clock, only 18 cars had registered for the show. After the rain took a break for a few hours and the roads started to dry, the final registration reached 51 cars.

The show presented "Top 30" picks and a Best of Show.

Our good friends, Jeff Shankle and Dave Bratton received special awards. Jeff's 1972 Buick station wagon received the Woodhouse Day Spa's pick and Dave's 1937 Ford convertible received the "Wild Ride" award.

The Best of Show award went to the 1961 Morgan 4/4 Series III belonging to Chuck Putsch.

Other Area Shows:

  • The Auto Smarts Radio Cruise and Ride atTen Pin Ally Car Show in Hilliard, Ohio on Saturday registered just under 60 cars. The Best of Show award went to Dr. Ron Rogers and his 1969 Plymouth GTX
  • The Mechanicsburg First Responders Car Show on Saturday had 148 cars in attendance. If anyone knows who won Best of Show, please post it in the comments.
  • Eighty-seven cars attended the Canal Winchester Labor Day Festival Car/Truck/Bike Show on Sunday. Tom Stewart's "Orange Crush" 1982 Chevy C10 pickup received the Best Truck award. Blake Behrens' 1949 Chevy Business Coupe took home the Best of Show honors.

Members of the Rusty Lug Nuts took home some hardware from the show.

  • The Flywheels car show in Prospect, Ohio on Saturday had 216 cars in attendance.

That's it for this week. If you have info about other shows that took place this weekend, please feel free to post it in the comments section.

A big thank you to Jeff Shankle and Dale Pearce for their help preparing this week's report.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Thursday Cruise-In

The Thursday evening cruise-in at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, Ohio had another excellent turnout with 269 cars.

This week's cruise-in "Unique Vehicle Award" goes to the 2008 Ford F-450 4x4 8-door pickup of Andy and Kim Matyac. According to the owner, the truck's powerplant is a twin-turbo diesel making well over 700 horsepower.

39th Annual Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show & Cruise-in:

The Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show & Cruise-in took place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Metro Place in Dublin, Ohio. After Goodguys, the Arthritis Show is the second largest car event in Central Ohio. The unofficial attendance numbers I have for this year are approximately 350 cars registered for Friday's open cruise-in and just over 500 cars for the class judging on Saturday.

Dave Bratton's 1937 Ford Convertible was the featured car on this year's six-foot trophy presented to the Top 50 cars during Friday's open cruise-in. Dave and Lou Koester sponsored the trophies this year.

Here are a few of the local Top 50 winners:

  • William Brown - 1979 Ford Mustang Pace Car
  • Scott McPherson (aka Galaxy Mac/Cadillac Mac) - 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
  • Mike Coughlin - 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500
  • Scott Mayo - 1968 Chevy Camaro
  • Dave Bratton - 1937 Ford Convertible
  • Mark Mitchell - 2004 Chevy SSR

One of the thrills for me was having the opportunity to see three 1963 split-window Corvette coupes all in the same weekend.

As luck would have it, a line of heavy thunderstorms roared through Central Ohio around 4 PM on Saturday. If anyone has information on the storms and the awards presentation on Saturday please post it in the comment section.

I did manage to take close to 170 photos from the show on Friday and Saturday before the rains hit. CLICK HERE if you want to see more cars and scenes from the 39th Annual Arthritis Classic Car Show and Cruise-In.

Speaking of thunderstorms, they impacted most if not all the Saturday evening shows and some of the Sunday ones as well. The show at the Dub Pub was postponed for the second week in a row and is now rescheduled for September 18. The Riverside Dairy Car Show was also postponed and will be rescheduled for another date.

Woodward Dream Cruise:

I know Michigan isn't anywhere close to Central Ohio. And for a lot of folks in Ohio, the sheer mention of the state causes a burst of expletives spewing forth from their mouths. But Dan "Boots" Longenette from Auto Smarts Radio and our good friend, Jeff Shankle, made the trip to that state up north this weekend for the annual Woodward Dream Cruise.

Jeff, bless his heart, "tagged" me on the 456 photos he took from the cruise and posted to Facebook. I went through all 456 and picked my favorites to share with everyone. Hope you enjoy them.

That's it for this week. Hopefully, we can get out of this pattern of rain on the weekends.

A big thank you to Jeff Shankle and Dale Pearce for sharing their photos from this past weekend.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Thursday Cruise-In

Attendance at the Thursday evening cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio was back up by over 200 this week (229 to be exact).

Of note during the evening was the air-brushed pickup truck honoring our military and police, and the Columbus Soap Box Derby Association with World Champion Eleni Fischer.

The Columbus Soap Derby Association will be hosting a Free test drive on September 10, 2022. You can learn more about the test drive and other races at https://youtu.be/QYbYqepTxtg.

Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts Car Show

With near perfect weather Friday evening, the Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts store in Marysville, Ohio had 39 cars in attendance for its monthly car show.

The show raised more than $200 for the Marysville and Milford Center Food Pantries.

Here are the award picks for this month:

Charity Car Show

Saturday I drove to Circleville, Ohio for the Charity Car Show. The show took place in the parking lot behind the Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home on Main Street.

Chazziz DJ Service provided the music and Box 65 provided hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and drinks at a reasonable cost. Registration was free with a donation of school supplies.

The show only registered 25 cars. Judging was done by points with three judges doing the scoring. Awards included Top Five, People's Choice, Director's Choice, and Best of Show.

These were the People's Choice and Director's Choice winners.

Best of Show went to Jim and Vivian Stevens with a 1973 Mercury Comet GT.

Blendon Senior Center Car Show

The Blendon Senior Center in Westerville, Ohio held its 18th annual car show on Saturday.

The show registered 61 cars. Best of Show honors went to Ben McGill with a 1966 Corvette restomod.

CLICK HERE for more cars from the Blendon Senior Center show.

Vance Outdoors Classic Car Cruise-In

The 7th Annual Classic Car Cruise-in took place on Saturday at the Vance Outdoors in Obetz, Ohio. Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smarts Cruise and Ride team were on hand to host the show. All proceeds went to Honor Flight Tri-State as part of the 2022 Fill the Plane Campaign. The event raised $110,000 for Honor Flight.

The show registered just under 180 vehicles. The Best of Show Award went to Ralph Carle's 1959 Chevy El Camino.

Hot Summer Nights Cruise-In

Downtown Bellefontaine, Ohio was the scene of the annual Hot Summer Nights Cruise-In on Saturday evening. This is the show where all cars register at the Fairgrounds and parade up Main Street to the downtown area around 5 o'clock.

This year the event registered 361 cars with close to another 150 in attendance that didn't register.

Sunday Shows

Scattered showers in the area on Sunday postponed one show and kept attendance low in three other shows.

Bid Dawg and the C-Town Cruisers registered 30 cars at The Point on Main Sports Bar & Grill Show.

The 2018 Dodge Charger Daytona 392 of Chad Herrick received the Best of Show honors.

The Whitehall NAZ Annual Car Show just couldn't escape the rain this year. A forecast of rain on the original date of June 26th postponed the show to August 14.

Sunday the show had 25 cars in attendance thanks to the rain. Our good friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup went home with the Best of Show Award. Tom Obert's Ford Mustang received the People's Choice Award.

I participated in the Wings and Rings Restaurant in Lewis Center, Ohio Car, Truck, & Bike Show hosted by Crossroads Events. This was the first of three shows scheduled at the restaurant this season.

The show registered 29 cars. Most of the show stayed dry until right before the awards ceremony. That's when a small cell of rain decided the parking lot full of show cars could use a litter water to finish out the event.

The Best of Show Award went to the 1947 Ford Special Deluxe belonging to Mike Mathews.

That's it for this week. I want to thank Jeff Shankle, Dale Pearce, and Dave Bratton for their help preparing this week's report.

NEWS AND NOTES

Der Dutchman Thursday Cruise-In:

Not much to report this week from Der Dutchman. Only 53 cars attended the cruise-in on Thursday thanks to scattered showers in the area. Not one drop fell on the cruise-in, however. Jeff Shankle and his Phone stayed dry the entire evening so no car photos were missed because of the weather. 😎

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is IMG_5601.jpeg

Richwood Bank Coffee and Cars Cruise-In:

With two other events in Delaware, Ohio on Saturday and the threat of morning rain, attendance was light at the Richwood Bank Coffee and Cars Cruise-In. Those that did attend not only got a free cup of their favorite morning beverage but were also treated to a demo of Kevins Towing's "heavy rescue" truck. What an impressive piece of equipment!

At the end of the cruise-in, the bank held a drawing for three door prizes. The top prize was a bucket of car care products and a bottle of Henry McKenna Bourbon Whiskey. As luck would have it Adam Lester, the winner of the top prize, rode his Harley to the cruise-in. The bottle of whiskey made the return trip to the bank in his car well worth it.

The Richwood Bank's next coffee and cars is scheduled for September 3, 2022.

Vettes, Rods, and Classics

The Capital City Corvette Club hosted its annual Vettes, Rods, and Classics Car Show at the Creekside district in Gahanna, Ohio on Saturday. Proceeds from the show benefit Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

The club registered 183 vehicles. As in past years, the rods and classics are judged separately from the Corvettes. Awards are presented to both groups along with a Best of Show winner chosen for each group.

The band Reelin' in the Years made its return to the show as the featured entertainment. If you haven't had a chance to hear the band, you should. They are one of the best local bands in my opinion.

The Best of Show award for the Rods and Classics went to Pat Jackson and his 1954 Chevy 3100 pickup truck.

The 1969 Corvette of Craig Grunkemeyer received the Best of Show award for the Vettes. Craig has the distinct honor of having both of his Corvettes receive the top award at the Vettes, Rods, and Classics show. His 1967 Corvette convertible won the Vettes BOS in 2017.

Here are the "Special" award winners starting with Jim McGruder with the Esoteric Detailing Award.

Mark Lester and his 1967 Chevy Camaro received the Best GM Award.

Not pictured:

  • Club Participation Award: Corvette Crew
  • Gahanna Parks and Recreation Award: Ryan Daniels - 2005 Chevy Colorado pickup
  • Best Mopar: Larry Ward - 1983 Dodge Truck D150
  • Best Ford: Phillip Lake - 2018 Ford Mustang
  • Corvette Car Award: Dan Shillingburg - 1965 Corvette
  • Jegs Award: Joel Charriez - 1993 Mazda
  • Mifflin Twp Fire Chief Award: Chris Zigan - 2011 Corvette
  • Mayor's Award: Larry & Vicki Tisdale - 1956 Chevy Bel Air 2 Dr Post
  • Best Import Award: Ryan Daniels - 2019 Honda Monkey
  • Wheel Craft Award: Jeff "Chubbo" Williams - 2016 Corvette Z06
  • Coughlin Chevrolet Award: Jim Van Paepeghem - 1967 Corvette Convertible
  • UBS Muirfield Wealth Partners Award: Cal Berkey - 1957 Ford Thunder Bird
  • ISCO Award: Tom & Brian Scott - 1996 Corvette Grand Sport

Powell Cruize-In & Pig Out

Larry Coolidge and the Powell DT Sertoma Club held its 30th Annual Cruize-In and Pig Out Car Show in downtown Powell, Ohio on Sunday.

This year's show registered 111 cars. Unfortunately, the forecast for a 10% chance of rain turned into 100% around one o'clock.

The rain lasted for about 90 minutes. Nothing is more frustrating than getting your car completely dried off from the first shower only to have another shower come through a few minutes later. Thank goodness the sun came back out in time to dry the roads by the end of the show.

The Sertoma Club presented award plaques to the "Top 50" cars and trucks along with six "Special/Choice" awards and a Best of Show.

Here are the "Special/Choice" award winners:

The Best of Show Award went to Matt Reed with a 1968 Oldsmobile 442.

Vanity Club Heels & Wheels Car Show (July 30th)

Bob (aka Country) sent me more information on the Heels & Wheels Car Show from July 30th.

The show had it's best attendance ever with 81 cars registered. Bob estimated that another 20 cars showed up but didn't register. Eighteen of the club's "Hotties" were in attendance.

Here is the Best of Show winner and a few other cars that attended the show courtesy of MoBear Photography.

Other Area Car Shows

  • The Commercial Point, Ohio Karting Classic Show on Friday registered 87 vehicles. Best of Show went to a Mercury Cougar. Tom Stewart's "Orange Crush" Chevy pickup received a Top 25 award.
  • The Heart of Ohio Antique Center in Springfield, Ohio added a swap meet to this month's cruise-in on Sunday. Approximately 80 cars were in attendance.
  • On Sunday, Dale Pearce and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup took 1st Place honors at the Vineyard Columbus East Campus Car Show in Pickerington, Ohio.
  • The Kenton Moose Lodge Show on Saturday registered 98 cars.

I want to once again thank Jeff Shankle, Dale Pearce, and Bob (Country) for their help preparing this week's report.
