NEWS AND NOTES

Empty Pockets Trunk or Treat Car Show:

The Empty Pockets Cruisers Car Club hosted its annual Trunk or Treat Car Show on Saturday at the Hilliard Presbyterian Church in Hilliard, Ohio. Each year, this event stands out as one of the premier Trunk or Treat shows in the area—and this year was no exception. Warm sunshine and above-average October temperatures helped draw a large crowd of participants and spectators, all in high Halloween spirits. The final registration count reached an impressive 115 vehicles.

All proceeds from the show benefited the Ronald McDonald House of Columbus. The big door prize this year—a flat-screen TV—was won by Shannon Williams. The 50/50 raffle winner took home $178.

At the end of the show, award plaques were presented to the Top 40 vehicles, along with special category awards for Best Kids CostumeBest Adult CostumeBest DecorationSponsor’s ChoiceDJ’s ChoiceEmpty Pockets Choice, and Hilliard Presbyterian Church Choice. A Best Motorcycle award was also planned, but no motorcycles registered this year.

Special Category Winners

  • Best Kids Costume: This cute little girl
  • Best Adult Costume: Jim and Carmen Pinks
  • Best Decorated Vehicle: 1988 Chevy Monte Carlo – Madilynn Imes
  • DJ’s Choice: 2024 Chevy (Evil Pumpkin) Corvette Stingray – Fast Eddie
  • Empty Pockets Choice: 1967 Pontiac GTO – Christy Calhoun
  • Hilliard Presbyterian Church Choice: 1965 Ford Mustang – Larry Shredl
  • Sponsor’s Choice: 1926 Dodge Rat Rod – Sean Catalogna

The combination of classic cars, community spirit, and Halloween fun made this year’s Trunk or Treat another one to remember. Here are just a few examples of the festive displays that make this event so special each year.

Fueled by Faith Car Show:

Well over 200 cars turned out for the Fueled by Faith Car Show on Saturday at Five14 Church on Hamilton Road in Columbus, Ohio. Proceeds from the event benefited the Driven Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping Ohio families meet basic human needs.

Our friend Dave Bratton was on hand for the event — here’s his report:

It was my understanding that registration would close at noon, so around 12:30 I asked how many vehicles had registered. I was told they had 230 cars and bikes signed up. However, I noticed additional participants registering even after the cutoff, so I’d estimate the final total was closer to 250.

Considering this was only their second year hosting the event, some growing pains were evident — especially during registration. The process was a bit of a nightmare. I stood in line for about 20 minutes just to receive a form to fill out, then waited another 20 minutes in a second line to get my registration number. That’s definitely an area that could use improvement next year.

I’m not sure how the judging was conducted, as I never saw anyone evaluating the cars. Others I spoke with said the same thing. Awards included the Top 25 plus five special awards:

  • Best Bike: Steve Elam – 1952 Harley
  • Best Old School: Don Rife – 1966 Pontiac
  • Best Truck: Brian Harris – 1966 Ford
  • Best New School: “Bling Amobi Breezy” – 2007 Corvette
  • Best of Show: Kevin Foust – 1941 Dodge WC40 Weapons Carrier

The weather was perfect, and Weldon’s Ice Cream was a welcome treat on a warm afternoon.

Here is a sample of some of the rides from the show thanks to photos shared by Dave Bratton and Kevin Foust.

Cruise-In • Brews Car Show:

Originally scheduled for May 3rd, the Cruise-in • Brews Car Show—sponsored by the Pickerington Lions Club and hosted by the C-Town Cruisers at the Combustion Brewery Taproom in Pickerington, Ohio—was postponed due to weather and held this past Saturday. The event drew 67 vehicles.

Several members of the Hi-Way Starz Car Club took home Top 30 Awards.

The Third Place winner was Rick Lawrence with a 1973 Chevy Chevelle SS.

Second Place Best of Show went to Bruce Koch with his 1931 Ford Model A.

The People’s Choice Best of Show was awarded to Dale Pearce and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup.

Bubba Hettinger shared photos capturing many of the fantastic rides that participated in the show.

Cruisin' With The King Car Show:

The Mid Ohio Cruisers Car Club wrapped up the season Saturday evening with its final Cruisin’ with the King Car Show in Marysville, Ohio. The event drew 48 cars, along with a few trick-or-treaters and plenty of candy to go around.

Thanks to Jeff Shankle for sharing photos of some of the vehicles that came out for this season finale.

That’s it for this week’s News and Notes! Hard to believe there’s only a little more than three weeks left in the outdoor season. Hopefully Mother Nature stays on our side a little longer so we can get in a few more shows and cruise-ins before it’s time to tuck the cars away for winter. The good news is, the Mid Ohio Cruisers will be back at Burger King on the third Saturday in January for their annual Snow Ball Cruise-In—proof that car season never really ends around here!

Contributors this week include Bubba Hettinger, Jeff Shankle, Kevin Foust, Dale Pearce, and Dave Bratton. A big thank you to each of them for their contributions!

Stay safe, stay cool, and keep those wheels rolling!
