NEWS AND NOTES

It was another weekend with a 90% chance of rain in the forecast for Saturday and about the same on Sunday. But once again, the rain never really showed up—though not before three shows got canceled and another three were postponed.

Der Dutchman Cruise-In:

It was a huge Thursday evening at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, Ohio. Not only was the restaurant packed with guests, but the cruise-in outside saw 420 cars in attendance. Thirty-seven of the 420 were first-time participants.

The Der Dutchman cruise-in is one of those rare events where you can see a Porsche, a Challenger, a Mustang, and a Volkswagen parked side by side.

Sprinkle in a ’33 Auburn, a Rolls-Royce, and a 1930s Buick, and you end up with the best variety of cars at any event in Central Ohio.

This week featured two particularly unique and unusual cars. The first was a heavily modified and nearly unrecognizable Miata, and the second was a Triumph Spitfire with a small-block engine—both set up for racing.

Whether you’re a die-hard car enthusiast or just someone who appreciates a good cruise-in, Thursday nights at Der Dutchman continue to offer an unforgettable mix of machines, memories, and community spirit.

Danbury Senior Living Car Show:

The Danbury Senior Living Center in Columbus, Ohio, hosted its second annual Car Show on Friday. The show featured just over 20 cars.

Everyone who brought a vehicle received a goody bag containing all the ingredients—minus the meat—to make a spaghetti dinner.

In addition to the goody bag, participants were treated to lunch, which included barbecue ribs and chicken, potato salad, chips, and a beverage.

Here are the cars that attended the show:

The event offered a fun and flavorful afternoon for car enthusiasts and residents alike.

Creative Auto Group/Advance Auto Parts Car Show:

The Creative Auto Group/Advance Auto Parts store in Marysville, Ohio, hosted its June Car Show on Friday evening. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t kind to the event—only six cars braved the steady drizzle to attend. However, the show still managed to raise $40 for the Milford Center Food Pantry.

One positive outcome of the rain was that it gave everyone a chance to hang out inside the Advance Auto Parts stockroom and shoot the breeze.

Harry and Mary Wise Memorial Car Show:

Sponsored by the Big Walnut Grill in Sunbury, Ohio, the 4th Annual Harry and Mary Wise Memorial Car Show took place on Saturday.

Registration was free; however, donations were graciously accepted. All proceeds from the show benefited the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio.

The show registered 49 cars, with another seven attending but not registering. Awards were given to the Top 20, along with a Family Choice Award and a Best of Show. In addition to the awards, there were door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.

Here are the Top 20 award-winning cars:

The Family Choice Award went to Jim Downing's 1966 Chevy Chevelle SS.

The Best of Show was awarded to David Cook’s 1967 Ford Fairlane.

It was a wonderful day of classic cars, community spirit, and support for a meaningful cause—and best of all, the rain stayed away.

Commercial Point Homecoming Car, Truck, & Bike Show:

The grounds of Scioto Elementary School were the site of the annual Commercial Point Homecoming and Fish Fry Car, Truck, and Bike Show.

The show on Saturday registered 85 cars. An array of awards recognized standout vehicles and participants. Five “Super Special” Awards were presented for truly exceptional entries. Large 3-foot trophies were awarded to the Top 25 vehicles overall, as well as the Top 3 Trucks and Top 3 Motorcycles. Additional honors included the Men’s Club Choice and the coveted Best of Show trophy.

Dale Pearce received one of the five ‘Super Special’ awards for his 1967 Corvette Stingray, while Steve Elam took home both a 3-foot Top Motorcycle trophy and a Top 25 Award. Dale also scored a good haul of door prizes.

Dave and Jackie Rolfe-Hiles received one of the Top 3 Truck Awards for their 1962 Dodge D100.

Don Benedik’s 1932 Ford Street Rod snagged the Best of Show award for the second week in a row.

Cruise-A-Palooza:

The city of Amanda, Ohio, held its seventh annual Cruise-A-Palooza Car Show on Saturday.

Sponsored by the Amanda Masonic Lodge #509 and the Clear Creek Valley Grange #1843, the show registered around 70 cars.

Dave O’Brien’s "Orange Crush" pickup and Dave and Jackie Rolfe-Hiles’ Dodge D-100 both received Top 25 Awards. For the Rolfe-Hiles, it was the first of two awards they earned that day.

Wayne Scott took home the Best of Show Award with his C7 Corvette Stingray.

Father's Day Weekend Car Show:

Car lovers and families gathered on Saturday for the 6th Annual Father’s Day Weekend Car Show in Springfield, Ohio. The event showcased an impressive lineup of classic and custom vehicles, with all proceeds benefiting The James Cancer Research Center. Custom trophies were awarded to the Top 25 vehicles, selected by professional judges.

Here’s a look at some of the 70-plus cars that showed up, as captured in photos by Tom Lawrence.

Other Area Shows:

  • The Timberview Golf Club in Marysville, Ohio, held a car and truck show on Saturday with around 20 vehicles taking part. People’s Choice awards were handed out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The top winner took home $200, second place got $100, and third place received $50
  • The Forest Glen Rehab and Healthcare Center in Springfield, Ohio had about 34 cars in attendance on Sunday for its annual Cruise-In.
  • Big congrats to Keith Rhul, Dave O’Brien, Jeff Tolley, Jason Kenneth Sanders, and Bubba Hettinger! All of them took home a Top 30 award at the Newark Moose Lodge Father’s Day Car Show.
  • Dave and Jackie Rolfe-Hiles continued their award-winning weekend on Sunday with a Top 30 Award at the LCS (Lancaster Car Scene) Father’s Day Car Show at Outerbelt Brewing in Carroll, Ohio. The Old Goats Car Club once again received the LCS Battle of the Clubs Top Club Award for having the most members in attendance.

That wraps up another fun week across Central Ohio’s car scene! Even with the sketchy forecast, most of the shows stayed dry, and a lot of us were able to hit up a few over the weekend.

Special thanks to Dale Pearce, Jeff Shankle, Tom Lawrence, Jeff Tolley, Dave and Jackie Rolfe-Hiles, Judy Hawksworth, Wayne Scott, Robert Hettinger, and Lynn Raduege for contributing their photos and write-ups for this report.

Stay safe, stay cool, and we’ll see you at the next show!
