Another month of car shows and cruise-ins will be in the books after this weekend. Five months down only four more to go in the 2021 season.

This week the schedule for Saturday isn't as heavy as it has been the past few weeks, and there's a little more variety to choose from on Sunday.

NEWS AND NOTES:

A Thursday evening + nice weather = lots of cars at Der Dutchman. This past week saw attendance at the cruise-in in Plain City, Ohio reach 374 cars.

The highlights from the evening were a gorgeous resto-moded 1967 Camaro with an LS3 engine dropped in it and a white and chrome Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Another cool thing at Der Dutchman was the license plate collection of Kerry Rich. Kerry has a license plate for every year one has been issued by the state of Ohio. His father started the collection and Kerry has continued it.

The Blackwing Shooting Center in Ostrander, Ohio held its 7th Annual Summer Blast Car Show on Saturday. The show registered 91 cars with a few more showing up but not registering. The awards were an engraved Yeti Mug. I didn't realize that's what they were presenting for awards or I would have taken some photos of them. It's not often the music at a car show has to compete with the sound of gunshots.

I received a report that the Battle of the Brands hosted by the GTO Association of Central Ohio at the Big Walnut Grill in Sunbury, Ohio set a new attendance record Saturday. The show registered somewhere in the neighborhood of 240 cars and could have had more but had to turn cars away because there were no more parking spaces. If you have any information on this show, please feel free to post in the comment section.

Jax Wax Street Madness is exactly what it turned out to be Saturday evening. There was a line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot when I arrived at 7:00 PM and a line of cars still waiting to get in when I left at 8:30 PM. There were too many cars to count, but I bet close to a thousand showed up for the event.

It was generally a younger crowd in attendance. There were Lots of Mustangs, Challengers, older Corvettes, and Japanese manufacturers. Not many classic cars. Some car owners had more money invested in speakers and amplifiers than they did in their cars. Air bagged suspensions seemed to be the norm Saturday evening.

Dave Bratton was kind enough to send photos from the Dick Marsh Memorial Car Show that to took place in Newark, Ohio on Sunday. The event registered around 100 cars. Best of Show went to Jimi Marshall and his 1960 Cadillac Eldorado.

And finally, congratulations to Brian Thompson for receiving the Larry Bickers Memorial Award at the C-Town Cruisers Saturday Night Cruise at Nik Fixx Automotive Show.

Another HUGE week of car events in Central Ohio. No less than 20 events on the schedule for Saturday.

The marquee events this week will be Jegs Speed Week at National Trail Raceway, The Performance Charity Car Show in downtown Delaware, and Ohio Car Shows & Cruise-Ins Facebook Group Show in Mount Vernon.

UPDATE: The Performance Charity Car Show scheduled for Saturday in downtown Delaware, Ohio has been canceled because of weather. It will be rescheduled for a later date.

NEWS AND NOTES:

After a two-year absence, Chesrown Chevrolet, Buick, GMC in Delaware, Ohio was back with a cruise-in Thursday evening. The event drew more than 100 cars and dozens of spectators.

Food trucks provided refreshments, and the crowd of cruisers and spectators enjoyed music from The Conspiracy Band. Best of all the rain stayed away during the cruise-in.

For more from the Chesrown Cruise-In, click here.

The July Creative Automotive/Advanced Auto Parts Show in Marysville, Ohio registered 27 cars on Friday. The show raised $115 for the Trinity Chapel Food Pantry in Milford Center, Ohio. The four award winners this month were:

Our friend, Dale Pearce, and his 1950 Chevy 3100 pickup had another good weekend. Dale's truck took the Best Truck award at the second annual Average Dude's Nationals hosted by the C-Town Cruisers on Saturday. On Sunday, his truck received the Peoples Choice Award at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club Show. The Yacht Club registered 45 cars. Not bad considering the weather on Sunday.

The Average Dude's Nationals Best of Show winner was Charlie Seymour of Chillicothe with a 1967 Nova SS.

Those of you that spend time on Facebook have probably seen lots of photos from the Goodguys Summit Racing Nationals held at the Ohio Expo Center this weekend. Rumor has it Jeff Shankle has been diagnosed with a severe case of camera phone finger after taking 450 photos at the event. Jeff was last seen icing his hand.

I won't bombard you with more photos from Goodguys, but I would like to point out something awesome that happened there this weekend. If you've ever attended an Empty Pockets Cruisers show, you may have seen Valeria Dresbach running around. She's an active member of the club and plays an important role in making their shows run smoothly. A big shout-out goes to Valeria's mom, Julie Hendrix, and her husband Dave Miller. Their 1971 Oldsmobile 442 won the Goodguys Restored Award. Congrats!

It's the Big One! It's Goodguys week! I thought it was going to be canceled again this year when the Governor closed the Ohio State Fair to the public. Just goes to show what I know. I guess cars trump cows, horses, and pigs.

The Crowne Plaza Columbus North-Worthington and Hilton Polaris are the host hotels so expect a lot of action at these locations after show hours.

Even if you're not planning on attending Goodguys, there are still plenty of Central Ohio events to choose from this week.

NEWS AND NOTES:

Der Dutchman:

With the threat of rain Thursday evening, only 114 cars showed up at the Der Dutchman Cruise-In in Plain City, Ohio. There was no food service. If you wanted something to eat you had to go into the restaurant. I don't know for sure but possibly management didn't think it was cost-effective to send out food and servers for only 100 cars. Something to watch out for as the season progresses. On the bright side, everyone who attended the cruise-in on Thursday was offered a free cup of ice cream to make up for the lack of food service.

Delaware First Friday:

Again this month, the organizers of First Friday in downtown Delaware, Ohio closed off a block of Sandusky Street just south of East William Street (Rt 36) for classic cars. About 50 cars participated in the event on Friday. You couldn't ask for a better evening of weather.

4th of July Show at Tony's Bar & Grille

Sixty-Four cars celebrated the 4th of July at Tony's Bar & Grille Friday evening in London, Ohio.

Our good friend, Russ Annis, took Best of Show honors with his 1967 Chevy Chevelle.

For more photos from the 4th of July Show at Tony's, click here.

Rod Knockers July Show - Marion, Ohio

The Rod Knocker's July show in Marion, Ohio registered 104 cars Saturday evening. It turned out to be a good evening for the Longenette vehicles. Stacie's 1948 Chevy pickup received a Top 25 award and Boots' Badd '57 Chevy was this month's Club's Pick.

Ye Olde Mill Rod Run - Utica, Ohio

The Newark Rodders Car Club held their annual Ye Olde Mill Rod Run on Saturday at the Velvet Ice Ye Olde Mill in Utica, Ohio. The club registered 103 cars. Click here for photos from the show.

Champaign Cruisers Firecracker July 4th Show - Urbana Ohio

As I mentioned last week, the biggest show of the weekend was going to be the Champaign Cruisers' Firecracker July 4th Show at Skelley Lumber Company in Urbana, Ohio. Not only was it the biggest show of the weekend, but it also set a new attendance record with 677 cars!

The Best of Show Award went to Dennis Miller with a 1937 Chevy Sedan.

Here are a few more cars from the Firecracker Show.

Special thanks this week to Jeff, Dave, and Russ for sending in car show photos.

We close out another month of the season this week. Lots of events are on tap for the Fourth of July weekend. The big event will be the Firecracker July 4th Show in Urbana, Ohio. It will draw between 400 and 700 cars depending on the weather.

NEWS AND NOTES:

The First Friday event in downtown Delaware, Ohio is reserving the same block again this weekend for classic cars. Cars are asked to arrive between 5 PM and 6 PM. No cars will be allowed in after 6 PM, and no cars will be allowed to leave prior to 9 PM. This is first come first serve so if you're interested in participating, get there early.

The cruise-in at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, Ohio had another big Thursday evening. Close to 60 Cobras from the Cobra Show in London, Ohio showed up at the cruise-in. Overall attendance for the evening topped 390 cars.

Dan "Boots" Longenette and the Auto Smart Radio crew hosted the first-ever car show at The Point at Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday. The show registered 57 cars.

One of the unique things offered by The Point was a canvas print of your vehicle from a favorite photo for $20. Our good friend, Dale Pearce, took advantage of the offer and had a print made of his truck. The end result turned out fantastic.

The Best of Show Award went to Jeff Fortner and his 1971 Buick GSX. Jeff's Buick has been on a "Hot Steak" lately. This is the third week in a row his car has received a well deserved top award.

If you've ever been to an Auto Smarts Radio show, you know Boots gives out a lot of "Category" awards. Click here to see some of the "Category" winners from the show.

Here are attendance numbers for some of the other area shows from this past weekend.

  • Surgergrove (Friday) - registered 80 cars
  • Marengo Methodist Church (Saturday) - registered 43 cars
  • Whitehall Church of the Nazarene (Sunday) - registered 60 cars.
