The Der Dutchman restaurant in Plain City, Ohio has seen rain cancel its weekly Thursday evening cruise-in three out of the last four weeks. But yesterday the weatherman finally blessed the cruise-in with a dry evening.
Last week the cruise-in host, Wayne Nisly, celebrated his 79th birthday! His wife, Luella, had planned to surprise him with a birthday cake at last week's cruise-in but the bad weather postponed the Birthday celebration to this week. Congratulations Wayne! I hope I'm as young-looking as you are when I'm 79.
With the dry weather this week, the cruise-in saw 61 registered vehicles -- nine of which were new to the cruise-in.
One of the new cars was this rare 1936 Auburn Boattail Speedster. It was a real stunner. I wished the owner would have opened the hood. I would have loved to have seen the engine compartment.
Another new car was this 2016 Camaro SS convertible. The couple it belonged to were out for a ride and happened to see the cruise-in and decided to stop in.
Harry Mullins has made several appearances at Der Dutchman this year but always in his 1955 Pontiac. This week he brought his 1968 Ford Ranchero.
Per usual, Wayne and assistant manager, Victor, closed the evening by raffling off cookies, pies, cakes and a $30 gift card that can be used at the restaurant and gift shop.
As has been the pattern this year, I did not win any of the deserts or the gift card. I was once again forced to walk over to the bakery to buy something sweet. I really don't mind. The calories are worth every bit of the cost.
If you're looking for something to do on a Thursday evening, stop by the Der Duthman cruise-in. It's always a good time.
