For as long as I can remember, The Arthritis Foundation's Classic Car show and the GoodGuys PPG Nationals have shared the same weekend. Usually that weekend was the second one in July. This week I was surprised to learn that this year the two events will NOT be held on the same weekend. I'm guessing many other car show enthusiasts may not be aware of this change.
For 2017, the GoodGuys 20th PPG Nationals will be held July 7-9, 2017 at the Ohio Expo Center. The Arthritis Foundation's show is scheduled for the following weekend, July 13-15, at the Dublin Metro Center.
Holding these two shows on separate weekends will have a significant impact on the central Ohio car show scene.
First and foremost, this will give classic car owners the opportunity to participate in both shows. In the past, owners had to choose between one show or the other. For owners of newer cars like myself, there really isn't a choice. Cars have to be 1972 and older to participate in the GoodGuys' Friday and Saturday Show & Shine. So for new cars the Arthritis show is the only choice.
Secondly, it will make it easier for spectators to attend both shows. It will also spread the cost of attendance over two weekends. I expect crowds to be larger for both shows. The Arthritis show will likely be the big winner here.
And finally is the effect this will have on scheduling for smaller car shows. Any group wishing to hold a show in July will now have to consider two weekends with very large shows instead of just one.
So there you have my thoughts on the two shows having their own weekend. Let me know what you think. Is this change good or bad?
